Two parallel-plate capacitors, 4.9 μF each, are connected in parallel to a 70 V battery. One of the capacitors is then squeezed

so that its plate separation is halved. Because of the squeezing, (a) how much additional charge is transferred to the capacitors by the battery and (b) what is the increase in the total charge stored on the capacitors

Answer: a) 343 μC. b) same as a)

Explanation:

If the capacitors are connected in parallel, this means that both have the same voltage between the plates, i.e., 70 V from the battery.

By definition, the capacitance of each capacitor can be written as follows:

C₁ = Q₁ / V  and C₂= Q₂ / V

Now, if the capacitors and in parallel, and if C₁ = C₂, ⇒Q₁ = Q₂ = C₁V = C₂V

Replacing by the values for C₁, C₂ and V, we have the following:

Q₁ = Q₂ = 4.9. 10⁻⁶ F. 70 V = 343 μC.

So, the total charge transferred by the battery to the capacitors is the sum of the charges on both capacitors:

Q = Q₁ + Q₂ = 2. 343 μC = 686 μC.

Now, let's suppose that C₁ is squeezed in such a way that the separation between plates is halved.

For a parallel-plate capacitor, we can write an expression for the capacitance, as follows:

C= ε A / d

where ε= dielectric constant of the insulating material between plates.

           A = Area of one of the plates

           d = separation between the plates.

We can see that d is halved, C will double.

If C is doubled, and V remains constant, Q must increase in the same proportion, i.e. must be double .

As the other capacitor remains without any changes, it will not receive any additional charge.

So the additional charge delivered by the battery will be equal to the original charge (because it will go double), i.e., 343 μC.

Now, due to the charge conservation principle, as charge can't be created or destroyed, and can't accumulate neither, the increase in the total charge stored on the capacitors, must be equal to the additional charge transferred by the battery to C₁ once it changed his value after squeezing it.

Your family has asked you to estimate the operating costs of your clothes dryer for the year. The clothes dryer in your home has
trasher [3.6K]

Answer:

The costs to run the dryer for one year are $ 9.03.

Explanation:

Given that the clothes dryer in my home has a power rating of 2250 Watts, and to dry one typical load of clothes the dryer will run for approximately 45 minutes, and in Ontario, the cost of electricity is $ 0.11 / kWh, to calculate the costs to run the dryer for one year the following calculation must be performed:

1 watt = 0.001 kilowatt

2250/45 = 50 watts per minute

45 x 365 = 16,425 / 60 = 273.75 hours of consumption

50 x 60 = 300 watt = 0.3 kw / h

0.3 x 273.75 = 82.125

82.125 x 0.11 = 9.03

Therefore, the costs to run the dryer for one year are $ 9.03.

Consider a 8-m-long, 8-m-wide, and 2-m-high aboveground swimming pool that is filled with water to the rim. (a) Determine the hy
Stolb23 [73]

Answer:

The hydrostatic force of 313920 N is acted on each wall of the swimming pool and this force is acted at 1 m from the ground. The hydrostatic force is quadruple if the height of the walls is doubled.

Explanation:

To calculate force on the walls of swimming pool whose dimensions are given as 8-m-long, 8-m-wide, and 2-m-high. We know that formula for hydrostatic force is \text {hydrostatic force}=\text {pressure} \times \text {area,}=\rho g h \times(l \times h)

\equiv \rho g h^{2} l, we know ρ=density of fluid=1000 g / c m^{3},

g=acceleration due to gravity=9.81 m / s^{2}, h=height of the pool=2 m and l=length of the pool=8 m.

hydrostatic force on each wall=1000 \times 9.81 \times 2^{2} \times 8 = 313920 N.

The distance at which hydrostatic force is acted is half of the height of the swimming pool.

At 1 m from the ground this hydrostatic force is acted on each wall.

The force is quadruple if the height of the walls of the pool is doubled this is because, the height is doubled and taken as h=4 m and substitute in the equation =\rho g h^{2} l = 1000 \times 9.81 \times 4^{2} \times 8 = 1255680 N. This is 4 times 313920 N.
