A pressure gage at the inlet to a gas compressor indicates that the gage pressure is 40.0 kPa. Atmospheric pressure is 1.01 bar.

The absolute pressure at the exit is 6.5 times the absolute pressure at the inlet. What is the absolute pressure of the gas at the inlet and what is the gage pressure of the gas at the exit?

Answer:

Given

inlet Pga =40kpa = 40000pa

Patm=1.01bar = 1.01 x 100000pa =101000pa

exit Pab= 6.5 (inlet Pab)

But generally, Pab = Patm + Pga

1. the absolute pressure of the gas at the inlet, inlet Pab?

inlet Pab = Patm + inlet Pga

            = 101000pa + 40000pa = 141kpa

the absolute pressure of the gas at the inlet, inlet Pab = 141kpa

2. the gage pressure of the gas at the exit? exit Pga?

exit Pab = Patm + exit Pga

exit Pga = exit Pab - Patm

             = (6.5 x 141kpa) - 101kpa

              = 815.5kpa

the gage pressure of the gas at the exit exit Pga=815.5kpa

Compute the theoretical density of ZnS given that the Zn-S distance and bond angle are 0.234 nm and 109.5o, respectively. The at
andriy [413]

Answer: the theoretical density is 4.1109 g/cm³

Explanation:

first the image of one set of ZnS bonding in the crystal structure, we calculate the value of angle θ

θ + ∅ + 90° = 180°

θ = 90° - ∅

θ = 90° - ( 109.5° / 2 )

θ = 35.25°

next we calculate the value of x from the geometry

given that;  distance angle d = 0.234

x = dsinθ

= 0.234 × sin35.25°)

= 0.135 nm = 0.135 × 10⁻⁷ cm

next we calculate the length of the unit cell

a = 4x

a = 4(0.135)

a = 0.54 nm = 0.54 × 10⁻⁷ cm

next we calculate number of formula units

n' = (no of corner atoms in unit ell × contribution of each corner atom in unit cell) + ( no of face center atom in a unit cell × contribution of each face center atom in a unit cell)

n' = 8 × 1/8) + ( 6 × 1/2)

= 1 + 3

= 4

next we calculate the theoretical density using  this equation

P = [n'∑(Ac + AA)] / [Vc.NA]

= [n'∑(Ac + AA)] / [(a)³NA]

where the ∑Ac is sum of atomic weights of all cations in the formula unit( 65.41 g/mol)

∑AA is the sum of weights of all anions in the formula unit( 32.06 g/mol)

Na is the Avogadro’s number( 6.023 × 10²³ units/mole)

so we substitute

P = [4( 65.41 + 32.06)] / [ ( 0.54 × 10⁻⁷ )³ × (6.023 × 10²³)]

= 389.88 / 94.84

= 4.1109 g/cm³

therefore the theoretical density is 4.1109 g/cm³

A small hot surface at temperature Ti-430K having an emissivity 0.8 dissipates heat by radiation into a surrounding area at T2-4
Nat2105 [25]

Answer:

389.6 W/m²

Explanation:

The power radiated to the surroundings by the small hot surface, P = σεA(T₁⁴ - T₂⁴) where σ = Stefan-Boltzmann constant = 5.67 × 10⁻⁸ W/m²-K⁴, ε = emissivity = 0.8. T₁ = temperature of small hot surface = 430 K and T₂ = temperature of surroundings = 400 K

So, P = σεA(T₁⁴ - T₂⁴)

h = P/A = σε(T₁⁴ - T₂⁴)

Substituting the values of the variables into the equation, we have

h = 5.67 × 10⁻⁸ W/m²-K⁴ × 0.8 ((430 K )⁴ - (400 K)⁴)

h = 5.67 × 10⁻⁸ W/m²-K⁴ × 0.8 (34188010000 K⁴ - 25600000000 K⁴)

h = 5.67 × 10⁻⁸ W/m²-K⁴ × 0.8 × 8588010000K⁴

h = 38955213360 × 10⁻⁸ W/m²

h = 389.55213360 W/m²

h ≅ 389.6 W/m²

The following statements are about the laminar boundary layer over a flat plate. For each statement, answer whether the statemen
Nikolay [14]

Answer:

1. B. False

2.  B. False

3. A. True

4. B. False

5. A. True

6. A. True

7. A. True

Explanation:

1. B. False

The relation of Reynolds' number, Reₓ to boundary layer thickness δ at a point x is given by the relation

\delta = \dfrac{x \times C}{\sqrt{Re_x} }

That is the boundary layer thickness is inversely proportional to the square root of the Reynolds' number so that if the Reynolds' number were to increase, the boundary layer thickness would decrease

Therefore, the correct option is B. False

2.  B. False

From the relation

Re_x = \dfrac{U_o \times x}{v}

As the outer flow velocity increases, the boundary layer thickness diminishes

3. A. True

As the viscous force is increased the boundary layer thickness increases

4. B. False

Boundary layer thickness is inversely proportional to velocity

5. A. True

The boundary layer model developed by Ludwig Prandtl is a special case of the Navier-Stokes equation

6. A. True

Given a definite boundary layer thickness, the curve representing the boundary layer thickness is a streamline

7. A. True

The boundary layer approximation by Prandtl Euler bridges the gap between the Euler (slip boundary conditions) and Navier-Stokes (no slip boundary conditions) equations.
