An open tubular gas chromatography column is 35.7 m long and has an inner diameter of 0.250 mm. It is coated on the inside wall

with a layer of stationary phase that is 1.8 µm (0.0018 mm) thick. Unretained solute, methane, passes through in 6.39 min, whereas toluene has a retention time of 16.35 min. Calculate the retention factor for toluene.

Answer:

The retention factor, k is 2.49

Explanation:

According to the theory of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), the retention factor (or capacity), k, of a column is the ratio of the retention time of a retained analyte (toluene) to that of the  un-retained solute (methane).

This implies that:

k = \frac{16.35  (mins)}{ 6.39 (mins)}  =  \frac{995 (secs)}{399 (secs)}

 retention factor, k  = 2.49.

Note that there is no unit for retention factor, as it is a ratio.

How are cancer cells different that normal cells
viva [34]

Answer:

I have that same photo (I always where that combo lol)

Explanation:

In contrast to normal cells, cancer cells don't stop growing and dividing, this uncontrolled cell growth results in the formation of a tumor. Cancer cells have more genetic changes compared to normal cells, however not all changes cause cancer, they may be a result of it.

The only way to convert between two substances is to use a _____ to _____ conversion.
kykrilka [37]

Mole to Mole.

Assuming you're referring to converting in general, there must always be a mole to mole conversion.

Gram to gram would be incorrect as you must have a molar conversion in order to do so.

Gram to mole would be incorrect because that would leave out molecular conversions which would require three steps rather than two.

Mole to molecule is incorrect as it leaves out grams, depending on the circumstances and equation provided.

Thus, through process of elimination, mole to mole is the correct answer.

Hope this helps!

If 40 grams of pentane are burned, how many grams of oxygen are needed ?
Helga [31]
1) Molar mass C5H12= 5*12 +1 *12=60+12=72 g/mol
2) 40g C5H12 * 1 mol C5H12/72 g C5H12 = 40/72 mol C5H12
 3)                              C5H12 + 8O2 ------> 5CO2 + 6H2O
by reaction                 1 mol      8 mol
from problem             40/72 mol  x mol

x=(40/72) * 8/1=(40*8)/72=(40)/9 mol O2
4) M(O2)=2*16 g/mol =32 g/mol
5) (40)/9 mol O2 *(32 g O2/ 1 mol )=(40 * 32)/9 =142.2 g O2

What do elements in block have in common?
iragen [17]

Answer:

The d-block elements are all metals and most have one or more chemically active d-orbital electrons. Because there is a relatively small difference in the energy of the different d-orbital electrons, the number of electrons participating in chemical bonding can vary.
