follicle-stimulating hormone is a pituitary hormone that acts on the follicle cells of the ovary to trigger the synthesis of cyc

lic AMP, which stimulates various metabolic changes. FSH normally has no effect on cardiac muscle cells. However, when ovarian follicle cells and cardiac muscle cells are grown together in mixed culture, a number of the cardiac muscle cells are seen to contract following addition of FSH to the medium. How might this observation be explained?

Answer:

Cells grown in culture tend to adhere to each other, through adhesins, so they are able to communicate with each other. They form gap junctions that allow the cytoplasm of the cells to exchange some molecules such as cyclic-AMP associated molecules in this case.

Therefore even though the FSH binds to the receptors on the ovarian follicle cells only (since these are the cells that bear the receptors for the hormone on their surface), the pathway and associated molecules for secondary messengers can diffuse across the across the gap junction into other cells, including those of the cardiac cells, hence inducing some contraction in these cells, as they respond to the secondary messengers.

Create a publication that will explain the evolution of taxonomy and the six kingdoms
lakkis [162]

Answer:

Traditionally, some textbooks from the United States and Canada used a system of six kingdoms (Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, Archaea/Archaebacteria, and Bacteria/Eubacteria) while textbooks in countries like Great Britain, India, Greece, Brazil and other countries use five kingdoms only (Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista and Monera).

Some recent classifications based on modern cladistics have explicitly abandoned the term "kingdom", noting that the traditional kingdoms are not monophyletic, i.e., do not consist of all the descendants of a common ancestor.

What is meant when we say that organisms evolve?
andreyandreev [35.5K]

Answer:

Biological evolution refers to the cumulative changes that occur in a population over time. These changes are produced at the genetic level as organisms' genes mutate and/or recombine in different ways during reproduction and are passed on to future generations.

Is the Monocercomonoide considered a life form?
konstantin123 [22]

Answer:

Monocercomonoides isn’t a living fossil, a holdout from the days of the earliest eukaryotes, Karnkowska notes. Its closest relatives still have small mitochondria, suggesting that it jettisoned the organelles fairly recently in evolutionary terms. She and her colleagues speculate that more eukaryotes missing mitochondria await discovery.
