what information do the reduction potentials of two elements give about a redox reaction between those elements

Chemistry

Answer: It tells us, if the substance will get oxidized or reduced.

Explanation:

The electrode reduction potential values of given substances determine the tendency to gain electrons.

If the species has negative reduction potential, it means that it will easily loose electrons and will be oxidized. Hence, it will be considered as a stronger reducing agent.

Similarly, if the species has positive reduction potential, it means that it will easily gain electrons and will be reduced. Hence, it will be considered as a stronger oxidizing agent.

For Example: The reduction potentials of Zn^{2+}\text{ and }Cu^{2+} are given as:

E^o_{Zn^{2+}/Zn}=-0.76V

E^o_{Cu^{2+}/Cu}=+0.34V

Thus, if a reaction occurs between zinc and copper, zinc with negative reduction potential will easily loose electrons and will act as anode. Copper with positive reduction potential will easily gain electrons and will act as cathode.

Hence, the reduction potential will tell us, if the substance will get oxidized or reduced.

What is the difference between chemical change and physical change
Nadusha1986 [10]
In a physical change the appearance or form of the matter changes but the kind of matter in the substance does not. However in a chemical change, the kind of matter changes and at least one new substance with new properties is formed. Hope this helps!

What is the pressure of a sample of gas at a volume of .335 L if it occupies 1700 mL at 850 mm Hg?
dangina [55]

Answer:

Pressure = 4313.43mmHg

Explanation:

P1 = ?

V1 = 0.335L

V2 = 1700mL =1700*10^-3L = 1.7L

P2 = 850mmhg

From Boyle's law, the volume of a fixed mass of gas is inversely proportional to its pressure provided that temperature remains constant.

P = k / v

K = pv. P1V1 = P2V2 = P3V3 =........=PnVn

P1V1 = P2V2

Solve for P1,

P1 = (P2*V2) / V1

P1 = (850 * 1.7) / 0.335

P1 = 4313.43mmHg

The pressure of the gas was 4313.43mmHg

Another chem question I need help with (multiple choice)
Andreyy89

Answer:

The answer to your question is letter B, 2-methylhexane.

Explanation:

Remember that for naming organic compounds first, we need to look for the largest chain of carbons.

In your example, the largest chain is horizontal and has 6 carbons.

Later, we need to circle all the branches, in your example there is only one branch located close to the left side

After that, we number the carbons of the main chain, starting in the corner with more branches, in your example we start from the first carbon on the left.

Finally, start naming the number of the carbon branch, later hte name of the branch and finally the name of the main chain.
