The answer is 14 - x.

If she is 14 now, and the question is looking for her age x years ago, it is basically just asking you to subtract x from 14.

It also can't be x - 14, because that means Susie's age is x and the question is asking for her age 14 years ago, and it can't be 14x, because that's 14 multiplied by x.

The answer is 14-x because if she 14, to find out x years less than 14, you would have to subtract x from 14 and the equation for that would be 14-x. :)

If the fifth and eighth terms of an arithmetic sequence are minus 9 and minus 21, respectively, what are the first four terms of
Reil [10]
One way to do this problem is to determine the common difference.  If the 5th and 8th terms are -9 and -21, we can do this by subtracting -9 from -21:

-21-(-9) = -12.  The 5th and 8th terms are not consecutive, so we have to think in terms of (8-5), or 3, times the common difference to get from -9 to -21.

Note that -12 divided by 3 is -4.  Thus, the common difference is -4.

Check:  -9 - 4 = -13; -13 - 4 = -17; -17 - 4 = -21 (which is correct).

We know that the 5th term is -9.  To find the 4th term, work backwards:  subtract (-4) from -9, which produces -9+4=-5.

The fourth term is -5.  Subtracting -4 from this (which is the same as adding 4 to this -5) produces the third term; it is -1.  Can you now find the 2nd and 1st terms using the same approach?

An airplane flies with a constant speed of 620 miles per hour. How long will it take to
LekaFEV [45]

Answer:

30 minutes

Step-by-step explanation:

Alright lets start by laying out what the problem gives us :

A plane flies 620 mph.

It is asking how long it will take to travel 310 miles.

We need to give our answer in minutes or hours.

So lets take mph and look at the full meaning "Miles per hour"

An hour has 60 minutes in it.

So really it is saying miles per 60 minutes as well as miles per hour

So you could say the plane is traveling 620 miles every 60 minutes.

So now lets look at the number 310.

Just looking at it I can tell you that 310 looks very close to half of 620, in fact it is exactly half!

So lets divide the 620 mph by the 310 miles it is asking and we get 2! Proving that 310 is half of 620.

Alright now lets divide both the number of miles and number of minutes :

620 miles per 60 minutes

divided by 2 both miles and minutes

310 miles per 30 minutes

So this is your answer. After this you get that it would take 30 minutes to travel 310 miles in a plane going 620 miles per hour!

I hope this helps and I could help you understand it. :)
