If 55.0 mL of ethanol (density=0.789g/mL)) initially at 9.0 ∘C is mixed with 55.0 mL of water (density=1.0g/mL) initially at 28.

6 ∘C in an insulated beaker, and assuming that no heat is lost, what is the final temperature of the mixture?

Answer:

Final temperature = 22.21  °C

Explanation:

Heat gain by ethanol = Heat lost by water

Thus,

m_{ethanol}\times C_{ethanol}\times (T_f-T_i)=-m_{water}\times C_{water}\times (T_f-T_i)

Where, negative sign signifies heat loss

Or,

m_{ethanol}\times C_{ethanol}\times (T_f-T_i)=m_{water}\times C_{water}\times (T_i-T_f)

<u>For ethanol: </u>

Density = 0.789 g/mL

Volume = 55.0 mL

Considering the expression for density as:

Density=\frac {Mass}{Volume}

So,

So, Mass= Density*Volume = 0.789 g/mL * 55.0 mL = 43.395 g

Initial temperature = 9.0 °C

Specific heat of ethanol = 2.57 J/g°C

<u>For water: </u>

Density = 1.0 g/mL

Volume = 55.0 mL

Considering the expression for density as:

Density=\frac {Mass}{Volume}

So,

So, Mass= Density*Volume = 1.0 g/mL * 55.0 mL = 55.0 g

Initial temperature = 28.6 °C

Specific heat of water = 0.450 J/g°C

So,

43.395\times 2.57\times (T_f-9.0)=55.0\times 4.186\times (28.6-T_f)

111.52515\times T_f-1003.72635=6584.578-230.23\times T_f

341.75515\times T_f=7588.30435

<u>Final temperature = 22.21  °C  </u>

D = m / V

It even gives you the density of gold in the problem. Major hint. Once you know the volume (using V = m / D) then you can calculate the height (thickness) from the equation...

V = L x W x H

Volume = Length x Width x Height

start by converting 200.0 mg into grams

1000 mg = 1 g

200. mg x (1 g / 10^3 mg) = 0.200 g

V = m / D

V = 0.200 g / (19.32 g/cm^3)

V = 0.01035 cm^3

Convert 2.4 ft and 1 ft to cm

2.4 ft x (12 in / 1 ft) x (2.54 cm / 1 in) = 73.15 cm

1 ft = 30.48 cm

Compute the height (thickness)

V = LxWxH

H = V / LW = 0.01035 cm^3 / 73.15 cm / 30.48 cm

H = 4.64 x 10^-6 cm

Convert to nanometers

4.64 x 10^-6 cm x (1 m / 100 cm) x (10^9 nm / 1 m) = 46.4 nm

Knowing the atomic radius of gold, I might have asked my students for the minimum number of gold atoms in this thickness of gold. This would assume that the gold atoms are all in a row. This would give the minimum number of gold atoms.

Atomic radius gold = 174 pm

Diameter = 348 pm

46.4 nm x (1 m / 10^9 nm) x (10^12 pm / 1 m) x (1 Au atom / 248 pm) = 133 atoms of gold

A) all mechanical waves need a medium to travel through.
This is true because mechanical waves move in a wave like manner at the atomic level. This is why an table vibrates when you put a speaker on top of it .
