Which explains upwelling in the oceans?

Physics

Leokris [45]2 years ago

Winds blowing across the ocean surface push water away. Water then rises up from beneath the surface to replace the water that was pushed away. This process is known as “upwelling.”

Upwelling occurs in the open ocean and along coastlines. The reverse process, called “downwelling,” also occurs when wind causes surface water to build up along a coastline and the surface water eventually sinks toward the bottom.

Water that rises to the surface as a result of upwelling is typically colder and is rich in nutrients. These nutrients “fertilize” surface waters, meaning that these surface waters often have high biological productivity.  Therefore, good fishing grounds typically are found where upwelling is common.

A spherical raindrop 2.5 mm in diameter falls through a vertical distance of 3900 m. Take the cross-sectional area of a raindrop
Karolina [17]

Answer:

276.62 m/s

Explanation:

t = Time taken

u = Initial velocity

v = Final velocity

s = Displacement

a = Acceleration due to gravity = 9.81 m/s² (positive downward and negative upward)

Equation of motion

v^2-u^2=2as\\\Rightarrow v=\sqrt{2as+u^2}\\\Rightarrow v=\sqrt{2\times 9.81\times 3900+0^2}\\\Rightarrow v=276.62\ m/s

<u>Neglecting air drag</u> the velocity of the spherical drop would be 276.62 m/s

Two glass marbles (1 and 2), each supported by a nylon thread, are rubbed against a piece of silk and then are placed near a thi
iragen [17]

Answer:

d.) Marbles 1 and 2 repel each other, but no interaction occurs with marble

Explanation:

Rubbing the glass against the silk charges the glass positively.

Assuming polarization is ignored,

●Glass won't conduct electrical charge. Therefore, acting as a insulator.

●neutral objects won't distribute it's charge when affected by charge objects in proximity. Therefore, over the marble surface, the charge remain spherically symmetrical (undisturbed)

Marble 1 is positive

Marble 2 is positive

Since marble 1 and 2 are positive, repulsion will occur.

marble 3 is neutral (still assuming polarization is ignored), therefore, no interaction with marble 1 and 2

D is the answer.

An object of height 2.7 cm is placed 29 cm in front of a diverging lens of focal length 16 cm. Behind the diverging lens, and 12
kati45 [8]

Answer:

A)  q = -8.488 cm ,  B)  m = 0.29

Explanation:

A) For this exercise in geometric optics, we will use the equation of the constructor

          \frac{1}{f} = \frac{1}{p} +  \frac{1}{q}

where p and q are the distance to the object and image, respectively and f is the focal length

in our case the distance the object is p = 29 cm the focal length of a diverging lens is negative and indicates that it is f = - 12 cm

         \frac{1}{q} = \frac{1}{f} - \frac{1}{p}

we calculate

          \frac{1}{q} = - \frac{1}{12} - \frac{1}{29}

          \frac{1}{q} = - 0.1178

          q = -8.488 cm

the negative sign indicates that the image is virtual

B) the magnification is given

          m = \frac{h'}{h} = - \frac{q}{p}

we substitute

          m = - \frac{-8.488}{29}

          m = 0.29

the positive sign indicates that the image is right
