1.If a nearsighted person has a far point df that is 3.50m from the eye, what is the focal length f1 of the contact lenses that

the person would need to see an object at infinity clearly?
2.If a farsighted person has a near point that is 0.600m from the eye, what is the focal length f2 of the contact lenses that the person would need to be able to read a book held at 0.350m from the person's eyes?

Answer: a) -3.5m b) 0.22man

Explanation:

a) A near sighted person is a person that can only see near objects clearly but not far objects.

According to the lens formula

1/u+1/v = 1/f

where u = object distance (distance between the object and the lens)

v = image distance (distance between the image and the lens)

f = focal length of the lens

Given u= infinity v = 3.5m f= ?

1/f = 1/infinity +1/3.5

Since the lens used for correcting near sighted person is concave lens therefore the image distance is negative due to virtual image produced by the lens.

We then have 1/f1 = 1/infinity -1/3.5

f1 = -3.5m

b) A far sighted person is a person that can only see far objects clearly but not near objects.

According to the lens formula

1/u+1/v = 1/f

Given u= 0.35m v = 0.6m f2= ?

1/f2 = 1/0.35 + 1/0.6

Since the lens used for correcting far sighted person is convex lens therefore the image distance is positive due to mostly real image produced by the lens (reason why the image distance is positive.

f2 = 0.22m

1. The focal length f_1 of the contact lenses that the person would need to see an object at infinity clearly is -3.5m

2. The focal length f_2 of the contact lenses that the person would need to be able to read a book held at 0.350m from the person's eyes is  0.22m

<h3>Explanation: </h3>

1.

A nearsighted person is the people that able to read a book or see a computer screen easily but they will have difficulty seeing things across the room. In other words, nearsightedness or myopiais a vision condition in which people can see close objects clearly, but objects farther away appear blurred.

  • Near point of distance from eye(d_i) = 0.60 m
  • Distance he can read (d_o)= 0.350 m

The focal length f_1 of the contact lenses that the person would need to see an object at infinity clearly is

\dfrac{1}{f} = \dfrac{1}{d_1} + \dfrac{1}{d_f}\\\dfrac{1}{f} = \dfrac{1}{infinity} + \dfrac{1}{-3.5}\\\dfrac{1}{f} = 0+ \dfrac{1}{-3.5}\\ f = -3.5

2.

Farsightedness or hyperopia is a condition in which you can see distant objects clearly, but objects nearby may be blurry

u= 0.35m

v = 0.6m

f_2 = ?

\frac{1}{u} +\frac{1}{v} = \frac{1}{f}

\frac{1}{0.35} +\frac{1}{0.6} =\frac{1}{f_2}

f_2 = 0.22 m

The lens used to correct far sighted person is convex lens, therefore the image distance is positive because of real image mostly produced by the lens

Consider two diffraction gratings with the same slit separation. The only difference between the two gratings is that one gratin
kobusy [5.1K]

Answer:

True The grid with more slits gives more angle separation increases

True. The grating with 10 slits produces better-defined (narrower) peaks

Explanation:

Such a system can be seen as a diffraction network in this case with different number of lines per unit length, the expression for the constructive interference of a diffraction network is

      d sin θ = m λ

where d is the distance between slits or lines, m the order of diffraction and λ the wavelength.

For network with 5 slits

      d = 1/5 = 0.2

For the network with 10 slits

      d = 1/10 = 0.1

let's calculate the separation (teat) for each one

      θ = sin⁻¹ (m λ / d)

for 5 slits

     θ₅ = sin⁻¹ (m λ 5)

for 10 slits

     θ₁₀ = sin⁻¹ (m λ 10)

we can appreciate that for more slits the angle increases

the intensity of a series of slits is

       I = I₀ sin²2 (N d/2) / sin² d/2)

when there are more slits (N) the peaks have greater intensity and are more acute (half width decreases)

let's analyze the claims

False

True The grid with more slits gives more angle separation increases

False

True The expression for the intensity of the diffraction peaks the intensity of the peaks increases with the number of slits as well as their spectral width decreases

False
