Answer:

 • Potassium (option C) has the smallest first ionization energy from the given elements.

Explanation:

First ionization energy is the energy required to separate one valence electron from an atom in gas phase.

The easier the atom can release the electron the lower the energy required to remove it, i.e. the lower the first ionization energy.

Sodium and magnesium are neighbor elements in the same period (period 3) of the periodic table. Sodium has one valence electron and magnesium has two valence electrons, both in the same principal energy level (n = 3). The valence electron of sodium is more easily removed than any of the two valence electrons from magnesium, due to the fact that the nuclear charge (number of protons) of the magnesium is greater than the nuclear charge of the sodium. As a general rule, in a period the nuclear charge increases from left to right, while the distance of the valence electrons from the nuclei is reduced, causing this that the first ionization energy increases from left to right down a period.

In conclusion the first ionization energy of sodium is smaller than the first ionization energy of magnesium, and the first ionization energy of potassium is smaller than the first ionization energy of calcium (these two elements are neighbors in the period 4).

Now you must compare the ionization energies of sodium and potassium, which are in the same group (column): sodium is directly above potassium.

In a column, the first ionization energies generally decrease from top to bottom. Meaning, that the first ionization energy of potassium is smaller than the first ionization energy of sodium. The reason behind this trend is that when you go down a group the electrons occupy a larger orbital (further away from the nucleus) causing that electrons be further away from the nucleus), and so less energy is required to remove them.

In conclusion, potassium is the element from the list that has the smallest first ionization energy.

Which process transfers heat from the ground to the air touching it? Conduction Convection Evaporation Radiation
Delicious77 [7]

Convection

Explanation:

Heat is a form of thermal energy borne as result of thermal energy. It is observed as temperature differences between places.

There are different types of heat transfer:

 • Conduction
 • Convection
 • Radiation

Conduction is a heat transfer which involves the actual movement of the collision of the molecules of the medium.

Convection is a heat transfer in fluids by their movement from areas of higher to places of lower heat.

Radiation is heat transfer using electromagnetism and does not involve molecules of the medium

The process of heat transfer from ground to the air touching it is convection. It involves particles of the air.

Two electrons are found in the same atom. One has the quantum number set (3, 2, 0, +?), and the other has the quantum number set
Vilka [71]

D. Same energy level but different sublevel.

Explanation

There are four quantum numbers [1]:

 • n, the principal quantum number,
 • l, the orbital angular momentum quantum number,
 • m_l, the magnetic quantum number, and
 • m_s, the electron spin quantum number.

As their names might suggest:

 • n determines the main energy level of an electron.
 • l determines the type of sublevel of an electron.
 • Each sublevel might contain more than one orbital. m_l gives the orbital of an electron.
 • Each orbital contains up to two electrons. m_s tells two electrons in the same orbital apart.

The two electrons in question come from the same atom. The question suggests that they have the same n, m_l, and m_s. As a result, both electrons are in main energy level n = 3. They share the same spin.

However, the two electrons differ in their value of l.

 • l = 2 for the first electron. It belongs to a d sublevel.
 • l = 1 for the second electron. It belongs to a p sublevel.

What is hydrogen role in nuclear fusion?
kicyunya [14]

Answer:

Fusion powers the Sun and stars as hydrogen atoms fuse together to form helium, and matter is converted into energy. Hydrogen, heated to very high temperatures changes from a gas to a plasma in which the negatively-charged electrons are separated from the positively-charged atomic nuclei (ions).
