The extraction of aluminum metal from the aluminum hydroxide in bauxite ore by the Hall-Héroult process is one of the most rema

rkable success stories of late 19th century practical chemistry, turning aluminum from a rare and precious metal into the cheap commodity it is today. In the first step, aluminum hydroxide reacts to form alumina and water: 2Al(OH)3(s)->Al2O3(s)+3H2O(g) In the second step, alumina and carbon react to form aluminum and carbon dioxide: 2Al2O3(s)+3C(s)->4Al(s)+3CO2(g) Write the net chemical equation for the production of aluminum from aluminum hydroxide and carbon. Be sure your equation is balanced.

Answer:

4Al(OH)_{3}(s)+3C(s)\rightarrow 4Al(s)+3CO_{2}(g)+6H_{2}O(g)

Explanation:

The steps involved in the extraction Al from Al(OH)3 are:

Step 1:

2Al(OH)_{3}(s)\rightarrow Al_{2}O_{3}(s)+3H_{2}O(g)

Step 2:

2Al_{2}O_{3}(s)+3C(s)\rightarrow 4Al(s)+3CO_{2}(g)

The net reaction which shows the extraction of Al from Al(OH)3 can be obtained by multiplying step 1 by a factor of 2 then adding it with step 2

Net reaction = Step 1 * 2 + Step 3

4Al(OH)_{3}(s)\rightarrow 2Al_{2}O_{3}(s)+6H_{2}O(g)

+ 2Al_{2}O_{3}(s)+3C(s)\rightarrow 4Al(s)+3CO_{2}(g)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4Al(OH)_{3}(s)+3C(s)\rightarrow 4Al(s)+3CO_{2}(g)+6H_{2}O(g)

Si una masa dada de hidrógeno ocupa 40 litros a 700 grados torr. ¿Qué volumen ocupará a 1 atmósfera de presión? (dar la presión
Svetach [21]

Answer:

V_2=36.84L

Explanation:

Hola,

En este caso, podemos usar la ley de Boyle, la cual nos permite analizar el comportamiento volumen-presión en un gas ideal de manera inversamente propocional:

P_1V_1=P_2V_2

Así, dado el volumen y la presión inicial, la cual se convierte a atmósferas (760 torr = 1atm), calculamos el volumen final a 1 atm como se muestra a continuación:

V_2=\frac{P_1V_1}{P_2}=\frac{700torr*\frac{1atm}{760torr}*40l }{1atm}\\  \\V_2=36.84L

Saludos!

What is the pH of a 0.28 M solution of ascorbic acid
Nady [450]

Hey there!

Values Ka1 and Ka2 :

Ka1 => 8.0*10⁻⁵

Ka2 => 1.6*10⁻¹²

H2A + H2O -------> H3O⁺  + HA⁻

 Ka2 is very less so I am not considering that dissociation.

Now Ka = 8.0*10⁻⁵ = [H3O⁺] [HA⁻] / [H2A]

lets concentration of H3O⁺  = X then above equation will be

8.0*10−5 = [x] [x] / [0.28 -x

8.0*10−5 = x² /  [0.28 -x ]

x² + 8.0*10⁻⁵x  - 2.24 * 10⁻⁵

solve the quardratic equation

X =0.004693 M

pH = -log[H⁺]

pH = - log [ 0.004693 ]

pH = 2.3285

Hope that helps!
