A lady in a faded gingham dress and her husband, dressed in a homespun threadbare suit, stepped off the train in Boston, and wal

ked timidly without an appointment into the president's outer office. The secretary could tell in a moment that such backwoods, country hicks had no business at Harvard and probably didn't even deserve to be in Cambridge. She frowned. "We want to see the president," the man said softly. "He'll be busy all day," the secretary snapped. "We'll wait," the lady replied. For hours, the secretary ignored them, hoping that the couple would finally become discouraged and go away. They didn't. And the secretary grew frustrated and finally decided to disturb the president, even though it was a chore she always regretted to do. "Maybe if they just see you for a few minutes, they'll leave," she told him. And he sighed in exasperation and nodded. Someone of his importance obviously didn't have the time to spend with them, but he detested gingham dresses and homespun suits cluttering up his outer office. The president, stern-faced with dignity, strutted toward the couple. The lady told him, "We had a son that attended Harvard for one year. He loved Harvard. He was happy here. But about a year ago, he was accidentally killed. And my husband and I would like to erect a memorial to him, somewhere on campus." The president wasn't touched—he was shocked. "Madam," he said gruffly, "We can't put up a statue for every person who attended Harvard and died. If we did, this place would look like a cemetery." "Oh, no," the lady explained quickly, "We don't want to erect a statue. We thought we would like to give a building to Harvard." The president rolled his eyes. He glanced at the gingham dress and homespun suit, then exclaimed, "A building! Do you have any earthly idea how much a building costs? We have over seven and a half million dollars in the physical plant at Harvard." For a moment the lady was silent. The president was pleased. He could get rid of them now. And the lady turned to her husband and said quietly, "Is that all it costs to start a University? Why don't we just start our own?" Her husband nodded. The President's face wilted in confusion and bewilderment. And Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford walked away, traveling to Palo Alto, California where they established the University that bears their name, a memorial to a son that Harvard no longer cared about. adapted from "Appearances" by Kasha Linka 8 What is ironic about the situation? A. The president used to know them from the town he was raised in. B. The couple turns out to be related to the secretary's family. C. Even though the couple is poorly dressed, they are millionaires. D. The couple is better educated than the president or the secretary.

Oscar would like to go to a movie without supervision. To try and get what he wants, he starts by asking his mom if he can go on
baherus [9]

Answer:

Door in face

Explanation:

In psychology, the door in face technique is a method of persuasion according to which the persuader tries to convince other person to comply to a large request (which the other person will likely say no to), then, the persuader makes a significantly smaller request and then the other person is likely to say yes.

It's been observed that using this technique the other person is most likely to accept the smaller request than if the request had been presented by its own at first (without the large request first).

In this example, Oscar wants to go to the movies by himself, however he asks his mom if he can go on a trip to the Rollercoaster Park and he already knows the answer will be no. We can see that Oscar is making a large request and that his mom will say no to this one, but this wasn't even what Oscar really wants to do. However, after this is asked, he asks if he can at least go to the movies by himself (and which is what he actually wanted to ask). This second request is significantly smaller than the first one and her mom says yes. Therefore, this is an example of the door-in-face technique.

This excerpt is from the U.S. Constitution.
Likurg_2 [28]

Answer:

This excerpt most represents the fundamental principle of Option B: checks and balances.

Explanation:

The balance of powers between the different branches of government are described in this passage from the US Constitution. While the passage most focuses on the power of the executive branch, meaning the president and his appointees, it also describes how the Senate has to consent to treaties by two thirds and that the Senate also provides advice and consent on other executive appointments. The excerpt describes how Congress has the power to decide who should appoint lower officers in the government representing another check and balance to executive power.
