I assume that the cost x is greater than the cost y

so

x-y=16 ----> x=y+16 ---> equation B

solve the system by substitution

substitute equation B in equation A

y+16+y=64

solve for y

2y=64-16

2y=48

y=\$24

Find the value of x

x=y+16 ---->  x=24+16=\$40

therefore

The cost of the shirts are $40 and $24
