Singly charged uranium-238 ions are accelerated through a potential difference of 2.26 kV and enter a uniform magnetic field of

magnitude 1.98 T directed perpendicular to their velocities. (a) Determine the radius of their circular path. (Give your answer to three significant figures.) ............ cm (b) Repeat this calculation for uranium-235 ions. (Give your answer to three significant figures.) ............ cm (c) How does the ratio of these path radii depend on the accelerating voltage? (d) How does the ratio of these path radii depend on the magnitude of the magnetic field?

Explanation:

It is given that,

Mass of singly charged uranium 238 is, m=3.95\times 10^{-25}\ kg

Potential difference, V=2.26\ kV=2.26\times 10^3\ V

Magnetic field, B = 1.98 T

(a) Let r is the radius of their circular path. It is given by :

r=\dfrac{1}{B}\sqrt{\dfrac{2mV}{q}}

q is the charge on electron

r=\dfrac{1}{1.98}\sqrt{\dfrac{2\times 3.95\times 10^{-25}\times 2.26\times 10^3}{1.6\times 10^{-19}}}

r = 0.05335 meters

(b) Mass of singly charged uranium 235 is, m=3.9\times 10^{-25}\ kg

r=\dfrac{1}{B}\sqrt{\dfrac{2mV}{q}}

q is the charge on electron

r=\dfrac{1}{1.98}\sqrt{\dfrac{2\times 3.9\times 10^{-25}\times 2.26\times 10^3}{1.6\times 10^{-19}}}

r = 0.053012 meters

(c) The radius of the acceleration voltage depends on the radius of path. Here, the voltage is same but for heavier ion the radius is more as compared to the lighter ion. The ratio is nor dependent on the accelerating voltage

(d) The ratio of these path radii do not depend on the magnitude of the magnetic field.

Hence, this is the required solution.

melisa1 [442]
In the given problem, we say various information's that are going to help us reach the ultimate answer to the question. Let us first write the information's that have been presented in front of us.
Mass of the car = 2000 kg
Velocity of the car = 25 m/s^2
Radius of the circle = 80 m
Now we already know the equation for calculating the centripetal force and that is
Centripetal Force = [mass * (velocity)^2]/Radius
                            = [2000 * (25)^2]/80
                            = (2000 * 625)/80
                            = 1250000/80
                            = 15625
So the centripetal force on the car is 15625 Newtons

aniked [119]
The name of the scientist who incorrectly theorized that it was the positive charge that moved through a circuit is Benjamin Franklin. Franklin made his famous experiments with a kite in a charged cloud.
He was the scientist that made the electrical notation where the current is given by the direction of the positive charges flow.
