The chief engineer at a university that is constructing large number of new student dormitories decides install a counterflow co

ncentric tube heat exchanger on each of the dormitory shower drains. The thin walled copper drains are of diameter Di 50 m. Wastewater from the shower enters the heat exchanger at Th,i 38 C while fresh water enters the dormitory Tc,i 10 C. The wastewater flows down the vertical wall of the drain in a thin, falling film, providing hh 10,000 W/m2. K.
A) If the annular gap is d = 10 mm, the heat exchanger length is L = 1 m, and the water flow rate is mdot = 10 kg/min, determine the heat transfer rate and the outlet temperature of the warmed fresh water.
B) If a helical spring is installed in the annular gap so the fresh water is forced to follow a spiral path from the inlet to the fresh water outlet, resulting in h_c = 9050 W/m2·K, determine the heat transfer rate and the outlet temperature of the fresh water.
C) Based on the result for part (b), calculate the daily savings if 15,000 students each take a 10-minute shower per day and the cost of water heating is $0.07/kW·h.

The yield strength of mild steel is 150 MPa for an average grain diameter of 0.038 mm ; yield strength is 250 MPa for average gr
djyliett [7]

Answer:

Explanation:

Hall-Petch equation provides direct relations between the strength of the material and the grain size:

σ=σ0+k/√d , where d- grain size, σ- strength for the given gran size, σ0 and k are the equation constants.

As in this problem, we don't know the constants of the equation, but we know two properties of the material, we are able to find them from the system of equations:

σ1=σ0+k/√d1

σ2=σ0+k/√d2 , where 1 and 2 represent 150MPa and 250MPa strength of the steel.

Note, that for the given problem, there is no need to convert units to SI, as constants can have any units, which are convenient for us.

From the system of equations calculations, we can find constant: σ0=55.196 MPa, k=18.48 MPa*mm^(0.5)

Now we are able to calculate strength for the grain diameter of 0.004 mm:

σ=55.196+18.48/(√0.004)=347.39 MPa

The strength of the steel with the grais size of 0.004 mm is 347.39 MPa.

Water flows through a horizontal 60 mm diameter galvanized iron pipe at a rate of 0.02 m3/s. If the pressure drop is 135 kPa per
maksim [4K]

Answer:

pipe is old one with increased roughness

Explanation:

discharge is given as

V =\frac{Q}{A} = \frac{ 0.02}{\pi \4 \times (60\times 10^{-3})^2}

V = 7.07  m/s

from bernou;ii's theorem we have

\frac{p_1}{\gamma}  +\frac{V_1^2}{2g} + z_1 = \frac{p_2}{\gamma}  +\frac{V_2^2}{2g} + z_2 + h_l

as we know pipe is horizontal and with constant velocity so we have

\frac{P_1}{\gamma } + \frac{P_2 {\gamma } + \frac{flv^2}{2gD}

P_1 -P_2 = \frac{flv^2}{2gD} \times \gamma

135 \times 10^3 = \frac{f \times 10\times 7.07^2}{2\times 9.81 \times 60 \times 10^{-5}} \times 1000 \times 9.81

solving for friction factor f

f = 0.0324

fro galvanized iron pipe we have \epsilon = 0.15 mm

\frac{\epsilon}{d} = \frac{0.15}{60} = 0.0025

reynold number is

Re =\frac{Vd}{\nu} = \frac{7.07 \times 60\times 10^{-3}}{1.12\times 10^{-6}}

Re = 378750

from moody chart

For Re = 378750 and \frac{\epsilon}{d} = 0.0025

f_{new} = 0.025

therefore new friction factor is less than old friction factoer hence pipe is not new one

now for Re = 378750 and f = 0.0324

from moody chart

we have \frac{\epsilon}{d} =0.006

\epsilon = 0.006 \times 60

\epsilon = 0.36 mm

thus pipe is old one with increased roughness

What does WCS stand for? A. Western CAD System B. Worldwide Coordinate Sectors C. World Coordinate System D. Wrong CAD Settings
Ray Of Light [21]

Answer:

The correct answer is C. World Coordinate System

Explanation:

The World Coordinate System has to do with that coordinate system which is fixed in the activities of the CADing. There is a default system in which we can refer to them as soon as we want to manipulate the objects and add new elements.

You work for a printing company, and you realize that your colleague sent incorrect price quotes to a client. You begin to write
xxTIMURxx [149]

Answer:

The sentence excerpted from the e-mail uses passive voice.

Given the  purpose of your message, this voice is appropriate.

Explanation:

Because the objective is to remedy the situation a passive voice is great because it emphasizes the action and the object instead of the subject.

We want to emphasize the document and the incorrect information, not our colleague.
