By using photons of specific wavelengths, chemists can dissociate gaseous HI to produce H atoms with certain speeds. When HI dis

sociates, the H atoms move away rapidly, whereas the heavier I atoms move more slowly. If a photon of 231 nm is used, what is the excess energy (in J) over that needed for dissociation

Answer:

The excess energy over that needed for dissociation is 3.712 × 10⁻¹⁹ J

Explanation:

Given the data in the question;

wavelength of proton λ = 231 nm = 231 × 10⁻⁹ m

we determine the energy of the proton;

E = hc / λ

where h is plank constant ( 6.626 × 10⁻³⁴ JS )

and c is the speed of light ( 3 × 10⁸ m/s )

we substitute

E = [ ( 6.626 × 10⁻³⁴ JS ) × ( 3 × 10⁸ m/s ) ] / [ 231 × 10⁻⁹ m ]

E = 8.61 × 10⁻¹⁹ J

we know that, bond energy for H-I is 295 kJ/mol

so, H = 295 × 10³ J/mol

Now, energy to dissociate HI will be;

⇒ H / N

where N is the Avogadro's number ( 6.023 × 10²³ mol⁻¹ )

energy to dissociate HI = ( 295 × 10³ J/mol ) / ( 6.023 × 10²³ mol⁻¹ )

= 4.898 × 10⁻¹⁹ J

Therefore, Excess energy over dissociation will be;

⇒ ( 8.61 × 10⁻¹⁹ J ) - ( 4.898 × 10⁻¹⁹ J )

= 3.712 × 10⁻¹⁹ J

The excess energy over that needed for dissociation is 3.712 × 10⁻¹⁹ J

In an acid-base titration, a student uses 21.35 mL of 0.150 M NaOH to neutralize 25.00 mL of H2SO4. How many moles of acid are i
GalinKa [24]

Answer: There are 0.006 moles of acid in the flask.

Explanation:

Given: V_{1} = 21.35 mL,        M_{1} = 0.150 M

V_{2} = 25.0 mL,           M_{2} = ?

Formula used to calculate molarity of H_{2}SO_{4} is as follows.

M_{1}V_{1} = M_{2}V_{2}

Substitute the values into above formula as follows.

M_{1}V_{1} = M_{2}V_{2}\\0.15 M \times 21.35 mL = M_{2} \times 25.0 mL\\M_{2} = 0.1281 M

As molarity is the number of moles of a substance present in a liter of solution.

Total volume of solution = V_{1} + V_{2}

= 21.35 mL + 25.0 mL

= 46.36 mL  (1 mL = 0.001 L)

= 0.04636 L

Therefore, moles of acid required are calculated as follows.

Molarity = \frac{no. of moles}{Volume (in L)}\\0.1281 M = \frac{no. of moles}{0.04635 L}\\no. of moles = 0.006 mol

Thus, we can conclude that there are 0.006 moles of acid in the flask.

Review the map that shows earthquake zones as yellow lines and active volcanoes as red dots. what pattern can you determine abou
aleksandr82 [10.1K]

A map that shows the location of volcanoes is called a Geologic Map. This kind of map contains information about the geological history and condition of volcanic sites.

<h3>What do Geologic Maps indicate?</h3>

Geologic maps indicate the following:

  • the location of volcanos
  • age of rock deposits found near the volcano
  • which volcanoes are active and those that aren't
  • types of rocks at these sites
  • faults fracture etc.

Note that the map specific to the question is unavailable hence the general response.

If a graduated cylinder has 28ml of water in it and you add an object which causes the water level to rise to 47ml, what is the
grin007 [14]

Answer:

The object placed in the water has a volume of 19 cm³

Explanation:

<u>Step 1: </u>Data given

volume of the cylinder before adding the object = 28 mL = 28 cm³

After adding an object with volume X the volume rises to 47 mL = 47 cm³

<u>Step 2:</u> Calculate the volume of the object

Volume of the object = Final volume - initial volume

Volume of the object = 47 cm³ (or 47 mL) - 28 cm³ ( or 28 mL) = 19 cm³ (or 19 mL)

The object placed in the water has a volume of 19 cm³
