A frictionless piston-cylinder device contains 10 kg of superheated vapor at 550 kPa and 340oC. Steam is then cooled at constant

pressure until 60 percent of it, by mass, condenses. Determine (a) the work (W) done during the process. (b) What-if Scenario: What would the work done be if steam were cooled at constant pressure until 80 percent of it, by mass, condenses

Answer:

a) the work (W) done during the process is -2043.25 kJ

b) the work (W) done during the process is -2418.96 kJ

Explanation:

Given the data in the question;

mass of water vapor m = 10 kg

initial pressure P₁ = 550 kPa

Initial temperature T₁ = 340 °C

steam cooled at constant pressure until 60 percent of it, by mass, condenses; x = 100% - 60% = 40% = 0.4

from superheated steam table

specific volume v₁ = 0.5092 m³/kg

so the properties of steam at p₂ = 550 kPa, and dryness fraction

x = 0.4

specific volume v₂ = v_f + xv_{fg

v₂ = 0.001097 + 0.4( 0.34261 - 0.001097 )

v₂ = 0.1377 m³/kg

Now, work done during the process;

W = mP₁( v₂ - v₁ )

W = 10 × 550( 0.1377 - 0.5092 )

W = 5500 × -0.3715

W = -2043.25 kJ

Therefore, the work (W) done during the process is -2043.25 kJ

( The negative, indicates work is done on the system )

b)

What would the work done be if steam were cooled at constant pressure until 80 percent of it, by mass, condenses

x₂ = 100% - 80% = 20% = 0.2

specific volume v₂ = v_f + x₂v_{fg

v₂ = 0.001097 + 0.2( 0.34261 - 0.001097 )

v₂ = 0.06939 m³/kg

Now, work done during the process will be;

W = mP₁( v₂ - v₁ )

W = 10 × 550( 0.06939 - 0.5092 )

W = 5500 × -0.43981

W = -2418.96 kJ

Therefore, the work (W) done during the process is -2418.96 kJ

At some airports there are speed ramps to help passengers get from one place to another. A speed ramp is a moving conveyor belt
Harrizon [31]

Answer:

It will take you 30.8 s to travel the 120 m of the ramp.

Explanation:

Hi there!

The equation for the position of an object moving in a straight line is:

x = x0 + v * t

Where:

x = position at time t

x0 = initial position

v = velocity

t = time

In this case, we will consider the start of the ramp as the origin of our reference system so that x0 = 0.

Now, let´s calculate the speed of the person walking on the ground:

x = v * t

120 m = v * 72 s

v = 120 m / 72 s

v = 1.7 m/s

If you walk on the ramp with that speed, your total speed will be your walking speed plus the speed of the ramp because both are in the same direction. Then, using the equation for the position:

x = v * t

In this case, v = speed of the ramp + walking speed

v = 2.2 m/s + 1.7 m/s = 3.9 m/s

120 m = 3.9 m/s * t

t = 120 m / 3.9 m/s = 30.8 s

It will take you 30.8 s to travel the 120 m

What are some ways to separate a mixture?
stiks02 [169]

A 200 g hockey puck is launched up a metal ramp that is inclined at a 30° angle. The coefficients of static and kinetic friction
nikitadnepr [17]

Answer:

71.76 m

Explanation:

We will solve this question using the work energy theorem.

The theorem explains that, the change in kinetic energy of a particle between two points is equal to the workdone in moving the particle from the one point to the other.

ΔK.E = W

In the attached free body diagram for the question, the forces acting on the puck are given.

ΔK.E = (final kinetic energy) - (initial kinetic energy)

Final kinetic energy = 0 J (since the puck comes to a stop)

Initial kinetic energy = (1/2)(m)(v²) = (1/2)(0.2)(26²) = 67.6 J

ΔK.E = 0 - 67.6 = - 67.6 J

W = Workdone between the starting and stopping points = (work done by the force of gravity) + (work done by frictional force)

Work done by the force of gravity = - mgh = - (0.2)(9.8)(h) = - 1.96 h

Workdone by the frictional force = F × d

F = μ N

μ = coefficient of kinetic friction = 0.30 (kinetic frictional force is the only frictional force that moves a distance of d, the static frictional force doesn't move any distance, so it does no work)

N = normal reaction of the plane surface on the puck = mg cos 30° = (0.2)(9.8)(0.866) = 1.697 N

F = μ N = 0.3 × 1.697 = 0.509 N

where d = distance along the incline that the puck travels.

d = h/sin 30° = 2h (from trigonometric relations)

Workdone by the frictional force = F × d = 0.509 × 2h = 1.02 h

ΔK.E = W = (work done by the force of gravity) + (work done by frictional force)

- 67.6 = - 1.96h + 1.02h

-0.942h = - 67.6

h = 71.76 m
