The major purpose of this theory in this nursing profession is to improve the health and quality of life of patients. These theories are used to describe, explain or predict the conditions in clinical practice.

The middle range theories are used to deal with the phenomena by one conceptual model because each theory deals with a limited aspect of the total reality composed by a conceptual model.

The theory is used as a framework that provides perspective and guidance to the research study. The theory is made up of three interconnected theories they are self care, theory of self-care deficit, and theory of nursing systems.
