1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 = 8/8 so 8 laps = 1 miles.

24/8= 3... so that mean he ran 3 miles around the track, to check work:

1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 = 8/8 so 8 laps = 1 miles.
1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 = 8/8 so 8 laps = 1 miles.
1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 = 8/8 so 8 laps = 1 miles.

if you count how many 1/8 there are you'll get 24 '1/8' therefore you know your answer is correct.
