If all the particles in a material are made up of

several smaller particles, and every larger particle

is identical, is the material a pure substance or

not? Explain your reasoning.

A pure substance is something like a compound and element. This material made of several particles which seem to be two different particles, I believe, is a mixture. So, it is not a pure substance mixtures are made up of more than one particle while compounds (In a fixed ratio, the fusion of two or more than two atoms) and elements are made up of one molecule essentially.

hichkok12 [17]

Answer:

A. The model could not explain how alpha particles could be deflected at large angles.

Explanation:

The plum pudding model of the atom was proposed by J. J Thomson. He suggested that that an atom is made up of dense particles of electrons surrounded by positive charges.

From the Gold foil experiment carried out by Ernest Rutherford, he noticed that the bulk of the alpha particles targeted at the foil passed through and a little fraction was heavily deflected back.

Rutherford then presented his nuclear model from here. He suggested a massive, dense and tiny nucleus where the protons and neutrons are located. The space outside the mass is dominated by orbiting electrons.

13. Which statement best describes an element? *
Natasha2012 [34]

Explanation:

Distinguish chemical substances from mixtures

Key Points

Matter can be broken down into two categories: pure substances and mixtures. Pure substances are further broken down into elements and compounds. Mixtures are physically combined structures that can be separated into their original components.

A chemical substance is composed of one type of atom or molecule.

A mixture is composed of different types of atoms or molecules that are not chemically bonded.

A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture of two or more chemical substances where the various components can be visually distinguished.

A homogeneous mixture is a type of mixture in which the composition is uniform and every part of the solution has the same properties.

Various separation techniques exist in order to separate matter, including include distillation, filtration, evaporation and chromatography. Matter can be in the same phase or in two different phases for this separation to take place.

Terms

substanceA form of matter that has constant chemical composition and characteristic properties. It is composed of one type of atom or molecule.

elementA chemical substance that is made up of a particular kind of atom and cannot be broken down or transformed by a chemical reaction.

mixtureSomething that consists of diverse, non-bonded elements or molecules.
