Equal amounts of methylene blue (319.85 g/mol) and potassium permanganate (158.034 g/mol) dyes were added to identical agar plat

es and allowed to diffuse. After 24 hours, the halo was measured to see how far the dyes had moved. Based on this information, which dye do you think will diffuse faster through the agar, and why?

Answer:

Potassium permanganate.

Explanation:

Both substances are dyes, but the methylene blue has a bigger molecular mass (319.85 g/mol), that means that the particles are bigger in comparison with the potassium permanganate that has a molecular mass of 158.034 g/mol.

Since the molar mass is the half in the case of potassium permanganate, it can be considered that the particle size is the half in size. In the agar, a smaller particle will present less resistance to flow, that means that it going to move faster.

____________ heat is the amount of heat required to change the temperature of 1 gram of a substance by 1°C, and it is related to
Jlenok [28]

Answer:

specific heat.

Explanation:

Definition:

The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of substance by one degree is called specific heat.

Formula:

Q = m. c. ΔT

Q = amount of heat required

m = mass of substance

c = specific heat of substance

ΔT = change in temperature

The substance with greater value of specific heat require more heat to raise the temperature while the substance with lower value will raise its temperature very quickly by absorbing smaller heat.

For example the beach sand gets hot very quickly because of lower specific heat of sand while water is colder than sand because of higher specific heat capacity.
