What is the correct formula for combining Mg2+ and Br1+
True [87]

Answer: The correct formula is MgBr_2

Explanation:

For formation of a neutral ionic compound, the charges on cation and anion must be balanced. The cation is formed by loss of electrons by metals and anions are formed by gain of electrons by non metals.

Here magnesium is having an oxidation state of +2 called as Mg^{2+} cation and bromine Br^{-} is an anion with oxidation state of -1. Thus they combine and their oxidation states are exchanged and written in simplest whole number ratios to give neutral MgBr_2.

The cations and anions being oppositely charged attract each other through strong coloumbic forces and form an ionic bond.

A 13.00 g sample of a compound contains 4.15 g potassium (k), 3.76 g chlorine (cl), and oxygen (o). calculate the empirical form
MrRissso [65]

To solve this problem, let us all convert the mass of each element into number of moles using the formula:

moles = mass / molar mass

Where,

molar mass K = 39.10 g / mol

molar mass Cl = 35.45 g / mol

molar mass O = 16 g / mol

and mass O = 13 g – 4.15 g – 3.76 g  = 5.09 g

moles K = 4.15 g / (39.10 g / mol) = 0.106 mol

moles Cl = 3.76 g / (35.45 g / mol) = 0.106 mol

moles O = 5.09 g / (16 g / mol) = 0.318 mol

The ratio becomes:

0.106 K: 0.106 Cl: 0.318 O

We divide all numbers with the smallest number, in this case 0.106. This becomes:

K: Cl: 3O

Therefore the empirical formula is:

KClO_{3}

If you use 1 mole of NaOH, how much NaAl(OH)4 is produced
abruzzese [7]
Answer:
             81.97 g of NaAl(OH)₄

Solution:
              The reaction for the preparation of Sodium Aluminate from Aluminium Metal and NaOH is as follow,

                 2 NaOH  +  2 Al  +  6 H₂O    →    2 NaAl(OH)₄  +  3 H₂

According to this equation,

          2 Moles of NaOH produces  =  163.94 g (2 mole) of NaAl(OH)₄
So,
       1 Mole of NaOH will produce  =  X g of NaAl(OH)₄

Solving for X,
                     X  =  (1 mol × 163.94 g) ÷ 2 mol

                     X  =  81.97 g of NaAl(OH)₄
