Which of the following statements best explains why the atomic radius increases from top to bottom of the periodic table? A. The

electronegativity decreases from top to bottom of the periodic table, so the atoms near the bottom have an increased capacity for electrons. B. For the atoms lower in the periodic table, there is more difference in charge between the electrons and the protons, which allows electrons to orbit farther from nucleus. C. The ionization energy decreases from top to bottom of the periodic table, so the atoms near the bottom have an increased capacity for electrons. D. For the atoms lower in the periodic table, the valence electrons are in higher energy levels and farther from the nucleus.

Answer:

D. For the atoms lower in the periodic table, the valence electrons are in higher energy levels and farther from the nucleus.

Explanation:

Atomic radius increases down the group because down the group, there an increase in the number of principle energy levels occupied. Now, these higher principal energy levels are made up of orbitals that are larger than the orbitals from the lower energy levels in size.

Therefore, the effect of this is that the greater number of principal energy levels will outweigh the increase in nuclear charge since nuclear charge also increases down the group and this in turn makes the atomic radius to increase as we go down the group.

Answer: C. For the atoms lower in the periodic table, the balance electrons are in higher energy levels and farther from the nucleus.

Explanation: As the valance electrons orbit farther from the nucleus the energy level increases from the top to the bottom of the periodic table. So the atoms lower in the periodic table, the balance electrons are in higher energy levels and farther from the nucleus, which result in an increase in the atomic radius.

Which ion does not have a noble gas configuration in its ground state? which ion does not have a noble gas configuration in its
Luda [366]

Answer: Option (d) is the correct answer.

Explanation:

The atomic number of Al is 13, so the electronic configuration of Al is as follows.

            1s^{2}2s^{2}2p^{6}3s^{2}3p^{1}

         = [Ne]3s^{2}3p^{1}

Al^{3+} = [Ne]

The atomic number of Sc is 21, so the electronic configuration of Sc is as follows.

         1s^{2}2s^{2}2p^{6}3s^{2}3p^{6}4s^{2}3d^{1}

        = [Ar]4s^{2}3d^{1}

 Sc^{3+} = [Ar]

The atomic number of As is 33, so the electronic configuration of As is as follows.

         1s^{2}2s^{2}2p^{6}3s^{2}3p^{6}4s^{2}3d^{10}4p^{3}

         = [Ar]4s^{2}3d^{10}4p^{3}

 As^{3-} = [Ar]4s^{2}3d^{10}4p^{6} = [Kr]

The atomic number of Ga is 31, so the electronic configuration of Ga is as follows.

        1s^{2}2s^{2}2p^{6}3s^{2}3p^{6}4s^{2}3d^{10}4p^{1}

       = [Ar]4s^{2}3d^{10}4p^{1}

 Ga^{3+} = [Ar]3d^{10}

Therefore, we can conclude that galium (Ga) ion does not have a noble gas configuration in its ground state.

A scientist observed that fiddler crabs are capable of plugging up the territorial burrows that they live in. These territorial
gladu [14]
The observation states a number of things. First, These crabs are territorial to the burrow they live in. This means that they each stick to their own and will defend theirs if necessary. During high tide they are underwater and during low tide they can be exposed. Now the limiting factors are things that could limit these creatures.

So some limiting factors that I can see based off this information is during low tide they are exposed to predators and are more likely to be harmed during that time than during high tide.

Another limiting factor is they are territorial which means they stay in the same area. This might not be dangerous predator wise but when they are located near each other food may be harder to get.

Finally also pertaining food, the tides could effect when they get food, it may be harder for them to get food during high tide then it is during low tide.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask me any more questions! Thanks.
