a. Calculate the mass is slugs and the weight in poundals of a 175 lbm man (i) on earth and (ii) on the moon, where the acceleration of gravity is one-sixth of its value on earth.

The weight is the attraction force exerted by the earth (or moon) on the body

This force is calculated by the second Law of Newton: F = m*a = m*g = weight.

i) In the Earth:

m = 175 lbm
g = 32.17 ft/s^2

=> Weight = 175 lbm * 32.17 ft/s^2 = 5,629.75 poundal

ii) g = 1/6 * 32.17 ft/s^2 = 5.36 ft/s^2

=> Weight = 175 lbm * 5.36 ft/s^2 = 938 poundal

b. A force of 355 poundals is exerted on a 25.0-slug object. At what rate (m/s2) does the object accelerate?

Second Law of Newton: F = m*a => a = F/m

a = 355 poundal / 25.0 slug = 14.2 ft/s^2

Conversion to m/s^2:

14.2 ft/s^2 * [0.3048 m/ft] = 4.33 m/s^2

Tin (II) fluoride, formerly found in many kinds of toothpaste, is formed in this reaction: Sn (s) + 2HF (g) ——> SnF2 (s) + H2
Readme [11.4K]

1.34 L of HF

Explanation:

We have the following chemical reaction:

Sn (s) + 2 HF (g) → SnF₂ (s) + H₂ (g)

First we calculate the number of moles of SnF₂:

number of moles = mass / molecular weight

number of moles of SnF₂ = 5 / 157 = 0.03 moles

From the chemical reaction we see that 1 mole of SnF₂ are produced from 2 moles of SnF₂. This will mean that 0.03 moles of SnF₂ are produced from 0.06 moles of HF.

Now at standard temperature and pressure (STP) we can use the following formula to calculate the volume of HF:

number of moles = volume / 22.4 (L/mole)

volume of HF = number of moles × 22.4

volume of HF = 0.06 × 22.4 = 1.34 L

A hydrocarbon of pentane has two isomeric forms—n-pentane and iso-pentane. The molecular formula of the n-pentane is C5H12. Pred
Monica [59]
An iso pentane is an isomeric form of n-pentane. Isomers have same molecular formula but differ in the atomic arragement projected in 3D and the arrangement of atoms primarily resulting to a different set of properties. In this case, isopentane also has a molecular formula of an alkane C5H12

Jim drops an iron magnet during a chemistry lab experiment. He finds that it is no longer magnetic. What has happened in terms o
jok3333 [9.3K]

Answer: option A.

A physical change occurred in which the iron remained iron, but lost one of its physical properties

Explanation: magnetization and demagnetization is a physical change as no new substance is form and it is easily reversed. When an iron rod is magnetized, it can loss it magnetic property by hitting it. So when an iron rod which is magnetized falls from a height it can also loss its magnetic property

What is the relationship between melting/boiling point and intermolecular forces
sattari [20]
Boiling points are a measure of intermolecular forces. The intermolecular forces increase with increasing polarization of bonds. Boiling point increases with molecular weight, and with surface area.
