Problem 61

The nth triangular number is

T(n) = n(n+1)/2

I'll rewrite this into

T(n) = 0.5n(n+1)

The triangular number right after this is

T(n+1) = 0.5(n+1)(n+2)

I replaced every n with n+1 and simplified

Let's see what we get when we add up the two expressions

T(n) + T(n+1)

0.5n(n+1) + 0.5(n+1)(n+2)

0.5n^2+0.5n + 0.5(n^2+3n+2)

0.5n^2 + 0.5n + 0.5n^2 + 1.5n + 1

n^2+2n+1

(n+1)^2

This shows that the sum of any two consecutive triangular numbers results in a square number

Here's a few examples

 • 0+1 = 1
 • 1+3 = 4
 • 3+6 = 9
 • 6+10 = 16
 • 10+15 = 25

Note each sum is a perfect square, which visually would plot out a square figure.

For quick reference, the set of the first few triangular numbers is {0, 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28, 36, 45, 55,...}

Answer: Square number

==========================================================

Problem 64

Let's say we go with n = 5.

This means,

T(n) = 0.5n(n+1)

T(n-1) = 0.5(n-1)(n-1+1)

T(n-1) = 0.5n(n-1)

T(5-1) = 0.5*5(5-1)

T(4) = 10

This says that when n = 5, the 4th triangular number is 10

Triple that result and add on n = 5

3*T(4) + n = 3*10+5 = 35

This result is beyond obvious which category of figurate number it belongs to. It's not a triangular number since it's not in the form n(n+1)/2. It's not a square number either.

Through a bit of trial and error, you should find it's a pentagonal number

Pentagonal numbers are of the form n(3n-1)/2

If you plugged n = 5 into that, it leads to 35

n(3n-1)/2 = 5*(3*5-1)/2 = 5*14/2 = 70/2 = 35

The diagram shown below represents the first few pentagonal numbers. The number of blue dots corresponds to the pentagonal number itself. Note the equal spacing when dealing with dots on each segment (eg: some interior blue dots are midpoints, others are quarter points, etc.)

Instead of having 1.5 times as many pink flowers as white
elena55 [62]

Answer:

The first row has 4 pink flowers and 2 white flowers

The second row has 6 pink flowers and 3 white flowers

The third row has 8 pink flowers and 4 white flowers.

Step-by-step explanation:

Based on the above question,

Molly has decided to plant a garden with twice as

many pink flowers as white flowers per row.

We can find the number of white flowers in each row by using the principle of ratio to solve this question.

Mathematically, what Molly planted is expressed as:

2 pink flowers : 1 white flower

Therefore for the three rows:

a. The first row is 4 pink flowers

Since, 2 pink flowers : 1 white flower

2 pink flowers = 1 white flower

4 pink flowers = designated as y

We cross multiply

2× y = 4 × 1

Divide both sides by 2

y = 4 ÷ 2

y = 2 white flowers.

Therefore, the first row that Molly planted 4 pink flowers has 2 white flowers.

b. The second row, Molly planted 6 pink flowers

Since, 2 pink flowers : 1 white flower

2 pink flowers = 1 white flower

6 pink flowers = designated as z

We cross multiply

2× z = 6 × 1

Divide both sides by 2

z = 6 ÷ 2

z = 3 white flowers.

Therefore, the second row that Molly planted 6 pink flowers has 3 white flowers.

c. The third row , Molly planted 8 pink flowers

Since, 2 pink flowers : 1 white flower

2 pink flowers = 1 white flower

8 pink flowers = designated as p

We cross multiply

2× p = 4 × 1

Divide both sides by 2

P = 8 ÷ 2

y = 4 white flowers.

Therefore, the third row that Molly planted 8 pink flowers has 4 white flowers.

Therefore, since Molly has decided to plant a garden with twice as

many pink flowers as white flowers per row,

The first row has 4 pink flowers and 2 white flowers

The second row has 6 pink flowers and 3 white flowers

The third row has 8 pink flowers and 4 white flowers.

A = (-123) + 77 + (-257) + 23 – 43
irga5000 [103]

Answer:

A=-323

Step-by-step explanation:

A = (-123)+77+(-257)+23-43

A = -46+(-257)+23-43

A = -303+23-43

A = -280-43

A = -323

Ede4ka [16]

in the number line, the end points are DG, and the point in between is O

DG = 88

DO = 5x + 12

OG = 2x

Set the equation. The two parts (DO & OG) are equal to the whole (DG)

2x + 5x + 12 = 88

Simplify. Combine like terms

(2x + 5x) + 12 = 88

7x + 12 = 88

Isolate the x. Remember to do the opposite of PEMDAS. Subtract 12 from both sides

7x + 12 (-12) = 88 (-12)

7x = 76

Isolate the x. Divide 7 from both sides:

7x/7 = 76/7

x = 76/7

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Find DO. Plug in "76/7" for x:

DO = 5x + 12

DO = 5(76/7) + 12

Simplify. Remember to follow PEMDAS. Multiply 76 with 5

DO = 380/7 + 12

Next, divide 380 with 7

DO = 54.29 (rounded)

Finally, add

DO = 54.29 + 12

DO = 66.29

66.29 is your answer

hope this helps
