Answer:

1.7 m/s

Explanation:

52,000kg x 3.4 m/s= 176,800

52,000+52,000= 104,000

176,800/104,000= 1.7m/s

A LOT OF POINTS! In your own words, compare and contrast transverse and longitudinal waves. Be sure to include at least one simi
tatiyna
Transverse Waves: Displacement of the medium is perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave.

To understand this it is good to think of a rope being held still by person B and being moved up and down by person A. The direction of propagation is from person A to B, so you will see the waves move along this way. But the displacement will be up and down.

Can travel in solids, but not in liquids and gas.

eg. Electromagnetic radiation

Longitudinal Waves: Displacement of the medium is parallel to the direction of propagation of the wave.

A good example for this is a slinky being pushed along the table, the propagation will be along the table and so will the displacement of all the 'rings'.

Can travel through all states of matter.

eg. Sound waves

If a = 8i + j - 2k and b = 5i - 3j + k show that a) a x b = -5i - 18j - 29k b) b X a = 50 + 18j +29k
loris [4]

Recall the definition of the cross product with respect to the unit vectors:

i × i = j × j = k × k = 0

i × j = k

j × k = i

k × i = j

and that the product is anticommutative, so that for any two vectors u and v, we have u × v = - (v × u). (This essentially takes care of part (b).)

Now, given a = 8i + j - 2k and b = 5i - 3j + k, we have

a × b = (8i + j - 2k) × (5i - 3j + k)

a × b = 40 (i × i) + 5 (j × i) - 10 (k × i)

… … … … - 24 (i × j) - 3 (j × j) + 6 (k × j)

… … … … + 8 (i × k) + (j × k) - 2 (k × k)

a × b = - 5 (i × j) - 10 (k × i) - 24 (i × j) - 6 (j × k) - 8 (k × i) + (j × k)

a × b = - 5k - 10j - 24k - 6i - 8j + i

a × b = -5i - 18j - 29k

What is the distance from axis about which a uniform, balsa-wood sphere will have the same moment of inertia as does a thin-wall
andrey2020 [161]

Answer:

D_{s} ≈ 2.1 R

Explanation:

The moment of inertia of the bodies can be calculated by the equation

     I = ∫ r² dm

For bodies with symmetry this tabulated, the moment of inertia of the center of mass

Sphere               Is_{cm} = 2/5 M R²

Spherical shell   Ic_{cm} = 2/3 M R²

The parallel axes theorem allows us to calculate the moment of inertia with respect to different axes, without knowing the moment of inertia of the center of mass

    I = I_{cm} + M D²

Where M is the mass of the body and D is the distance from the center of mass to the axis of rotation

Let's start with the spherical shell, axis is along a diameter

     D = 2R

    Ic = Ic_{cm} + M D²

    Ic = 2/3 MR² + M (2R)²

    Ic = M R² (2/3 + 4)

    Ic = 14/3 M R²

The sphere

    Is =Is_{cm} + M [D_{s}²

    Is = Ic

    2/5 MR² + M D_{s}² = 14/3 MR²

    D_{s}² = R² (14/3 - 2/5)

    D_{s} = √ (R² (64/15)

    D_{s} = 2,066 R
