Give the name and formula of the compound formed from the following elements: a) Sodium and nitrogen b) Oxygen and strontium c)
elena-s [515]

Answer:  a) Sodium and nitrogen : NaN_3  : sodium nitride.

b) Oxygen and strontium : SrO :  strontium oxide.

c) Aluminum and chlorine : AlCl_3  : aluminium chloride.

d) Cesium and bromine : CsBr  : cesium bromide.

Explanation:

For formation of a neutral ionic compound, the charges on cation and anion must be balanced. The cation is formed by loss of electrons by metals and anions are formed by gain of electrons by non metals.

a) Sodium and nitrogen : Here sodium is having an oxidation state of +1 called as Na^{+} cation and nitrogen forms an anion N^{3-} with oxidation state of -3. Thus they combine and their oxidation states are exchanged and written in simplest whole number ratios to give neutral NaN_3  named as sodium nitride.

b) Oxygen and strontium : Here strontium is having an oxidation state of +2 called as Sr^{+} cation and oxygen forms an anion O^{2-} with oxidation state of -2. Thus they combine and their oxidation states are exchanged and written in simplest whole number ratios to give neutral SrO  named as strontium oxide.

c) Aluminum and chlorine : Here aluminium is having an oxidation state of +3 called as Al^{3+} cation and chlorine forms an anion Cl^{-} with oxidation state of -1. Thus they combine and their oxidation states are exchanged and written in simplest whole number ratios to give neutral AlCl_3  named as aluminium chloride.

d) Cesium and bromine : Here cesium is having an oxidation state of +1 called as Cs^{+} cation and bromine forms an anion Br^{-} with oxidation state of -1. Thus they combine and their oxidation states are exchanged and written in simplest whole number ratios to give neutral CsBr  named as cesium bromide.

A sample of sodium reacts completely with 0.284 kg of chlorine, forming 468 g of sodium chloride. What mass of sodium reacted?
Verizon [17]

Answer:

mass of sodium reacted is 184.1 g

Explanation:

  • Na + Cl → NaCl

mass Na = X = ?

∴ mass NaCl = 468 g

∴ mass Cl = 0.248 g

∴ molar mass NaCl = 58.44 g/mol

∴ atomic mass Cl = 35.453 a.m.u

∴ atomic mass Na = 22.989 a.m.u

⇒ moles Na = (X gNa)*(mol Na/22.989 g) = X/22.989 mol Na

⇒ mass NaCl = (X/22.989 mol Na)*(mol NaCl/mol Na)*(58.44 gNaCl/mol NaCl) = 468 g NaCl

clearing "X":

⇒ ((58.44)(X))/(22.989) = 468 g

⇒ X = 184.1 g = mass Na reacted

Problem 3.100 a chemical plant uses electrical energy to decompose aqueous solutions of nacl to give cl2,h2, and naoh: 2nacl(aq)
chubhunter [2.5K]

First we calculate the number of moles of Cl2, that is:

moles Cl2 = 1.5*10^10 grams/71 grams/mol = 211267605.633802817 mol = 2.1 * 10 ^ 8 mole = x <span>

So that based on stoichiometry, the number of moles of NaOH = 2x and that of H2 = x mol

mass of NaOH = 4.2*10^8 * 40 =168*10^8 grams = 1.68 * 10^6 kg = 1.68 metric tons

<span>mass of H2 = 2.1*10^8 * 2 = 4.2*10^8 grams = 0.042 * 10^6 kg = 0.042 metric tons.</span></span>

Find the density of an object that has a mass of 5 kg and a<br> volume of 50 cm3.
iren2701 [21]
  • Mass=5kg=5000g
  • Volume=50cm^3

\\ \rm\longmapsto Density=\dfrac{Mass}{Volume}

\\ \rm\longmapsto Density=\dfrac{5000}{50}

\\ \rm\longmapsto Density=100g/cm^3

If you have a mass of 60 kg on earth, what is your weight in newtons?
AnnyKZ [126]
To calculate your weight in Newton's simply use the following equation to solve for the weight.

Fg = m • g
Fg = 60 kg • 9.81 m/s^2
Fg = 588.6 kgm/s^2

Fg = 588.6 N.

Acceleration due to gravity on earth is 9.81 m/s ^2.
