The Healthy People Initiative aims to guide public health promotion and disease prevention efforts to improve public health.

Since 1980, the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has published his decennial publication, Healthy People, to identify science-based goals, monitor progress, and motivate and focus actions. Guidelines for narrowing down the Healthy People benchmarks the following:

  • Increase public awareness and understanding of the determinants of health, disease and disability and opportunities for progress.
  • Provide measurable goals and objectives applicable at the national, state and local levels.
  • Engage multiple sectors to take action to strengthen policies and improve practices based on the best available evidence and evidence.
  • Identify important research, evaluation, and data collection needs.

Healthy People 2030 is his fifth iteration of the initiative and continues that tradition, with approximately 350 key goals tracked over a decade.
