Assume two identical sinusoidal waves are moving through the same medium in the same direction. Under what condition will the am

plitude of the resultant wave be greater than either of the two original waves?(a) in all cases(b) only if the waves have no difference in phase (c) only if the phase difference is less than 90°(d) only if the phase difference is less than 120° (e) only if the phase difference is less than 180°

The correct options are B and C

Let us assume the amplitude of the two sinusoidal waves be A1 and A2

As it is mentioned that the waves are identical, therefore A1=A2= a

The resultant wave of any two waves is given by the formula:

Resultant wave= \sqrt{A1^2+A2^2+2A1A2cos\alpha }

where A1 and A2 are amplitudes of waves 1 and 2 and \alpha is the angle between the waves

Now as per the formula, it is the the factor 2cos\alpha that will decide that amplitude is greater than original or not

Hence we know that maximum value of cos \alpha is when \alpha is 0 degrees

Now it is known that value of cos\alpha varies from 1 to 0 for o degrees to π/2

and the value varies from 0 to -1 for angles π/2 to π

Case 1: when \alpha=0 degree

           Resultant wave R = \sqrt{A1^2+A2^2+2cos0A1A2}= \sqrt{2A^2+2A^2}=\sqrt{4A^2}   =2A

Case 2: When \alpha is less than 90

let us consider \alpha = 45 degree

 Resultant wave R =

\sqrt{A1^2+A2^2+2cos45A1A2}= \sqrt{2A^2+2A^2/2}=\sqrt{3A^2}   =\sqrt{3} A

case 3:

When \alpha is less than 120

\sqrt{A1^2+A2^2+2cos120A1A2}= \sqrt{2A^2-2A^2/2}=A

case 4: when \alpha is less than 180 degrees

the value will be 0

Hence only option b and d are correct

A fish is able to jump vertically out of the water with a speed of 4.45 m/s. What is the speed of the fish as it passes a point
rjkz [21]

Answer:

Explanation:

given

initial velocity u = 4.45m/s

Height = 0.6m

g = 9.8m/s²

Required

final velocity v

Using the equation of motion;

v² = u²-2gH (upward motion of the fish makes g to be negative)

v² = 4.45²-2(9.8)(0.6)

v² = 19.8025-11.76

v² = 8.0425

v = 2.84 m/s

Hence the speed of the fish as it passes a point 0.6 m above the water is 2.84m/s

To get the time, we will use the formula

v = u - gt

2.84 = 4.45 - 9.8t

2.84-4.45 = -9.8t

-1.61 = -9.8t

t = 1.61/9.8

t = 0.164secs

Hence the time taken is 0.164secs

How much work in joules must be done to stop a 920-kg car traveling at 90 km/h?
tankabanditka [31]

Answer:

Work done, W = −287500 Joules

Explanation:

It is given that,

Mass of the car, m = 920 kg

The car is travelling at a speed of, u = 90 km/h = 25 m/s

We need to find the amount of work must be done to stop this car. The final velocity of the car, v = 0

Work done is also defined as the change in kinetic energy of an object i.e.

W=\Delta K

W=\dfrac{1}{2}m(v^2-u^2)

W=\dfrac{1}{2}\times 920\ kg(0-(25\ m/s)^2)

W = −287500 Joules

Negative sign shows the work done is done is opposite direction.
