A common car battery consists of six identical cells each of which carries out the reaction: Pb + PbO2 + 2HSO4- + 2H+ → 2PbSO4 +

2H2O Suppose that in starting a car on a cold morning a current of 350 amperes is drawn for 12.2 seconds from a cell of the type described above. How many grams of Pb would be consumed? (The atomic weight of Pb is 207.19.)

Answer:

The correct answer is 4.58 grams.

Explanation:

Based on the Faraday's law of electrolysis, at the time of electrolysis, the amount of deposited substance is directly equivalent to the concentration of the flow of charge all through the solution. If current, I, is passed for time, t, seconds and w is the concentration of the substance deposited, then w is directly proportional to I*t or w = zIt (Here z refers to the electrochemical equivalent or the amount deposited when 1 C is passed).

For the reaction, n * 96500 C = molar mass

1C = molar mass/n*96500 = Equivalent wt / 96500

w = Equivalent wt / 96500 * I * t

In the given reaction,

Pb + PbO2 + 2HSO4- + 2H+ → 2PbSO4 + 2H2O, n = 2, the current or I drawn is 350 A, for time, t 12.2 seconds.

Now putting the values in the equation we get,

w = 207.19 / 2 * 96500 * 350 * 12.2 ( The molecular weight of Pb is 207.19 and the equivalent weight of Pb is 207.19 / 2)

w = 4.58 gm.

What is the oxidation number of S In Li2SO4? <br><br>A. +1<br>B. +2<br>C. +5<br>D. +6
-Dominant- [34]

Answer:

6

Explanation:

Li has an oxydation number of 1          2*1     = 2

O has an oxidation number of -2         4(-2) = -8

S has an oxydation number of x           1 * x = x

The oxidation number on the molecule is 0.

So here is the equation

2 - 8 + x = 0        Combine like terms

-6 + x = 0            Add 6 to both sides

-6 + 6 + x = 6      Combine like terms

x = 6

Sulphur in this case has an oxidation number of 6

Calculate the energy per photon (in J) associated with a frequency of 1260 kHz. Submit answer in scientific notation using the f
aniked [119]

Taking into account the definition of photon and energy of a photon, the energy per photon is 8.3538×10⁻³⁸ J.

<h3>Energy of a photon</h3>

Electromagnetic radiation carries energy, which can be absorbed or emitted. To explain the processes of emission and absortion, Plank and Einstein proposed that the energy of radiation is composed of indivisible units (quanta). In each elemental process only a quantum of light can be emitted or absorbed. Each of these quanta was called a "photon".

The exchanges of energy between matter and radiation take place not continuously, but by discrete and indivisible quantities or quanta of energy. The quantum of energy is proportional to the frequency of radiation.

The relationship between the amount of energy (E) transported by the photon and its frequency (f) is determined by the following expression:

E=h×f

where:

  • E is the energy of a photon.
  • h is the Planck's constant h.
  • f is the frequency of electromagnetic radiation.

<h3>Energy per photon</h3>

In this case, you know:

  • h=  6.63*10⁻³⁴ Js
  • f= 1260 kHz= 1,260,000 Hz= 1.26×10⁶ Hz (being 1 kHz=1000 Hz)

Replacing in the definition of energy of a photon:

E= 1.26×10⁶ Hz× 6.63×10⁻³⁴ Js

<u><em>E= 8.3538×10⁻³⁸ J</em></u>

Finally, the energy per photon is 8.3538×10⁻³⁸ J.
