The equation expressing the statement "y varies directly as x"  is y=kx.

Explanation

The statement that y varies directly as x is analogous to saying that  the ratio of y to x is constant. In other words, when x increases, y likewise increases and that when x decreases, y decreases proportionally.

Mathematically, we express the relationship that the ration of y is to x is constant is expressed as; \frac{y}{x} =k where k is the constant of proportionality.

We can then solve the relationship for y to determine the correct form of the relationship as shown below,

\frac{y}{x} =k\\\rightarrow y=kx

"My distance to the center of the earth is about 4000 miles when I am on the surface. If I go to a height of 8000 miles above th
lord [1]

Given,

Distance from the surface to the center of the earth, d=4000 miles

Distance from the center to you at a height of 8000 miles, a= 8000+4000=12000 miles

The gravitational force acting on a person at the surface is equal to his weight.

From Newton's Universal Law of Gravitation, the gravitational force is

F=\frac{G\times M\times m}{r^2}

Where G is the gravitational constant, M is the mass of the earth, m is the mass of the object/person, r is the distance between the center of the earth and the object/person

At the surface, this force is equal to the weight of the person, W=mg

i.e.

F_s=\frac{G\times M\times m}{d^2}=W

On substituting the of d,

W=\frac{\text{GMm}}{4000^2}

At a height of 8000 miles from the surface, the gravitational force is equal to,

F_a=\frac{GMm}{12000^2}

On dividing the above two equations,

\frac{F_a}{W}=\frac{4000^2^{}}{12000^2}=\frac{1}{9}

Therefore,

F_a=\frac{1}{9}W

Therefore at a height of 8000 miles above the surface of the earth, the force of gravity becomes 1/9 time your weight.

A delivery truck travels 2.8 km North, 1.0 km East, and 1.6 km South. The final displacement from the origin is ___km to the ___
34kurt

Answer:

The final displacement from the origin is <u>1.6</u> km to the <u>NE</u>

Explanation:

The directions in which the delivery truck travels are;

1) 2.8 km North = 2.8·\hat j, in vector form

2) 1.0 km East = 1.0·\hat i, in vector form

3) 1.6 km South = -1.6·\hat j, in vector form

Therefore, to find the final displacement, Δx, of the delivery truck, we add the individual displacements as follows;

Final displacement, Δd = 2.8·\hat j + 1.0·\hat i +(-1.6·\hat j) = 1.2·\hat j + 1.0·\hat i

Final displacement, = 1.0·\hat i + 1.2·\hat j

Where;

Δx = The displacement in the x-direction = 1.0·\hat i

Δy = The displacement in the y-direction = 1.2·\hat j

The magnitude of the resultant displacement vector is given as follows

\left | d \right | = √((Δx)² + (Δy)²) = √(1² + 1.2²) ≈ 1.6 (To the nearest tenth)

The magnitude of the resultant displacement vector ≈ 1.6 km

The direction of the resultant vector is positive for both the east and north direction, therefore, the direction of the resultant vector = NE

Therefore, the resultant displacement of the delivery truck is approximately 1.6 km, NE from the origin.

Speed is velocity in a given direction<br> O True<br> O False
Zarrin [17]

Answer:

FALSE

Explanation:

Velocity = speed with direction.

Think of speed and direction like rockets and missiles. Rockets are not smart. Missiles are smart. Rockets go in one direction. Missiles can track their targets, they have a specific destination, a specific direction.

Velocity is often used in physics, because its almost useless to know how fast an object is going if you don't know which direction it is going.

Think of it like this. If the Weather man told you a hurricane was traveling at 30 miles an hour, but didn't tell you which direction it was going, you would have no idea where to run, or if it was going to hit you at all. However, if he told you it was going 30 miles an hour to the North, and you were West of it, you would be fine, and wouldn't have to worry.
