Classification of substance:

1. Element

The simplest and pure form of substance is known as an element. It cannot be broken down by physical or chemical means. Hydrogen (H), carbon (C) and oxygen (O) are the examples of elements.

2. Compound

When two or more different elements are held together by chemical bonds, it results in the formation of compounds. These can further be broken down into their constituent particles. There is no retention of properties of elements after the formation of compounds. NaCl, {\text{N}}{{\text{H}}_3} and {{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}{\text{O}} are examples of compounds.

Mixture:

The combination of two or more substances where retention of properties of constituents is observed is known as mixture. Its composition is variable and has no fixed formula. Saline solution, concrete, and sand are some examples of mixtures.

Classification of mixture:

1. Homogeneous mixtures

The mixtures having uniform or same composition throughout are known as homogeneous mixtures. Examples of homogeneous mixtures are air, orange juice and blood.

2. Heterogeneous mixtures

The mixtures with non-uniform or different composition throughout are called heterogeneous mixtures. Examples of heterogeneous mixtures are ice cubes in cola, sand and sugar, and soda.

Compounds are formed by the chemical combination of two or more different elements whose properties are lost once a compound is formed. Mixtures are formed by the combination of two or more substances whose properties experience retention even after the formation of mixtures. A different new substance is formed in compounds whereas no such substance is produced in case of mixtures.

For example, {{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}{\text{O}} is a compound formed from {{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}} and {{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}. Here, {{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}} and {{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}} are gases but {{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}{\text{O}} is a liquid. But on the other hand, saline solution is salty in nature so it has properties of its constituent particles and is therefore a mixture.
