Two factors determine whether a substance is a solid, a liquid, or a gas:

<span> 1) The kinetic energies of the particles (atoms, molecules, or ions) that make up a substance. Kinetic energy tends to keep the particles moving apart.<span> '

2) The attractive inter molecular forces between particles that tend to draw the particles together.</span></span>

Explanation:

A matter is a substance that has some mass and that also occupies volume. A matter can be present in solid, liquid or gaseous state.

These states are determined by the intermolecular forces present in the substance and the spaces or kinetic energy of the particles.

  • As in solid state, the molecules are held together by strong intermolecular forces of attraction. Hence, they have least kinetic energy and have fixed shape and volume.
  • In liquids, molecules are slightly away from each other and their molecules have some kinetic energy because of which they are able to slide past each other. Liquids do not have a fixed shape but they do have fixed volume.
  • In gases, molecules are farther apart from each other as they are held together by weak Vander waal forces. As a result, they have high kinetic energy and rapidly collide with each other. So, gases are able to diffues at a faster rate.

. A sample of crude oil has a density of 0.87 g/mL. What volume (in liters) does a 3.6 kg sample of this oil occupy
gayaneshka [121]

Answer:

The volume is 4.13793 L

Explanation:

Density is a quantity that expresses the relationship between the mass and the volume of a body, so it is defined as the quotient between the mass and the volume of a body:

density=\frac{mass}{volume}

Density is a characteristic property of every body or substance.

The most commonly used units of density are \frac{kg}{m^{3} } or \frac{g}{cm^{3} } for solids, and \frac{kg}{L} or \frac{g}{mL} for liquids and gases.

In this case, you know:

  • density= 0.87 \frac{g}{mL}
  • mass= 3.6 kg= 3,600 g (being 1 kg=1,000 g)
  • volume= ?

Replacing:

0.87\frac{g}{mL} =\frac{3,600 g}{volume}

Solving:

volume =\frac{3,600 g}{0.87\frac{g}{mL}}

volume= 4,137.93 mL

Being 1,000 mL=1 L, then volume= 4,137.93 mL= 4.13793 L

Zinc sulfate is a 2-ion electrolyte,
Gekata [30.6K]

<u>Answer:</u> The value of <em>i</em> is 1.4 and 40% dissociation of 100 particles of zinc sulfate will yield 60 undissociated particles.

<u>Explanation:</u>

The equation used to calculate the Vant' Hoff factor in dissociation follows:

\alpha =\frac{i-1}{n-1}

where,

\alpha = degree of dissociation = 40% = 0.40

i = Vant' Hoff factor

n = number of ions dissociated = 2

Putting values in above equation, we get:

0.40=\frac{i-1}{2-1}\\\\0.40=i-1\\\\i=1.4

The equation used to calculate the degee of dissociation follows:

\alpha =\frac{\text{Number of particles dissociated}}{\text{Total number of particles taken}}

Total number of particles taken = 100

Degree of dissociation = 40% = 0.40

Putting values in above equation, we get:

0.40=\frac{\text{Number of particles dissociated}}{100}\\\\\text{Number of particles dissociated}=(0.40\times 100)=40

This means that 40 particles are dissociated and 60 particles remain undissociated in the solution.

Hence, 40% dissociation of 100 particles of zinc sulfate will yield 60 undissociated particles.

What is the molecular formula of compound x?
givi [52]
Since there is one carbon with 4 Fluorines attached to it, and both compounds are no metals, we use the covalent method for naming,

Here we ignore the prefix for the first element if it is 1. Mono. Then pay attention to the second one, it would be tetra, because tetra means 4. Here there are 4 fluorines.

Drop ine and place ide

CF4 = carbon tetrafluoride.
