An old clock has a spring that must be wound to make the clock hands move. Which statement describes the energy of the spring an
kondaur [170]

Answer:

D

Explanation:

When the spring is wound, then it gathers potential energy in the form of tension energy. As it slowly unwinds, the potential energy is converted to kinetic energy of the hands' movements of the clock. This energy is channeled through the use of cogs/gears in the clock.

Kisachek [45]

Answer:

v = 0.84m/s, v(max)= 0.997m/s

Explanation:

Initial work done by the spring, where c is the compression = 0.28m:

W_s = \frac{1}{2}kc^2

Work lost to friction:

W_f =\mu mg(c-x)

Energy:

E = W_s-W_f=\frac{1}{2}kc^2 -\mu mg(c-x)=\frac{1}{2}mv^2+\frac{1}{2}kx^2

(a) Solve for v:

v=\sqrt{\frac{k}{m}(c^2-x^2)-2\mu g(c-x)}

(b) Solve \frac{dv}{dx}=0 for x:

\frac{dv}{dx}=\frac{\mu g-\frac{k}{m}x}{\sqrt{\frac{k}{m}(c^2-x^2)-2\mu g(c-x)}}

\frac{dv}{dx}=0 if:

\mu g-\frac{k}{m}x = 0

x_{max} = \frac{\mu gm}{k}

v_{max}=\sqrt{\frac{k}{m}c^2-2\mu gc+(\mu g)^2\frac{m}{k}}

Which is the phase change in which a substance changes from a gas to liquid?
Aleksandr [31]

Answer:

Condensation

Explanation:

The phase change in which a substance changes from a gas to liquid is Condensation.

There are  3 natural states of matter;

Solids, Liquids, and Gases.

Matter under certain conditions can change from one state to another. When Solids are heated they change into Liquids through the process of Heating. Upon cooling, the Liquids convert to Solid through freezing. When a Liquid such as water is heated, it converts into the Gaseous state through evaporation. Upon cooling, the Gas converts back into the Liquid state through Condensation.

A child bounces a 60 g superball on the sidewalk. The velocity change of the superball is from 22 m/s downward to 15 m/s upward.
fgiga [73]

complete question:

A child bounces a 60 g superball on the sidewalk. The velocity change of the superball is from 22 m/s downward to 15 m/s upward. If the contact time with the sidewalk is 1/800 s, what is the magnitude of the average force exerted on the superball by the sidewalk

Answer:

F = 1776  N

Explanation:

mass of ball = 60 g = 0.06 kg

velocity of downward direction = 22 m/s = v1

velocity of upward direction = 15 m/s = v2

Δt = 1/800 = 0.00125 s

Linear momentum of a particle with mass and velocity is the product of the mass and it velocity.

p = mv

When a particle move freely and interact with another system within a period of time and again move freely like in this scenario it has a definite change in momentum. This change is defined as Impulse .

I = pf − pi = ∆p

F =  ∆p/∆t  =  I/∆t

let the upward velocity be the positive

Δp =  mv2 - m(-v1)

Δp =  mv2 - m(-v1)

Δp = m (v2 + v1)

Δp = 0.06( 15 + 22)

Δp = 0.06(37)

Δp = 2.22 kg m/s

∆t  = 0.00125

F =  ∆p/∆t

F =  2.22/0.00125

F = 1776  N

Initially there were 10 bulbs of 60 Watt power

So total power of all bulbs = 60 * 10 = 600 W

now each bulb used for 4 hours daily

so total energy consumed daily

E = P * t

E = 600 * 4 = 2400 Wh

E = 2.4 kWh

now we have total power consumed in 1 year

E = 365 * 2.4 = 876 kWh

cost of electricity = 10 cents/ kWh

so total cost of energy for one year

P_1 = 876 * 10 = 8760 cents = $87.60

Now if all 60 Watt bulbs are replaced by 30 Watt bulbs

So total power of all bulbs = 30 * 10 = 300 W

now each bulb used for 4 hours daily

so total energy consumed daily

E = P * t

E = 300 * 4 = 1200 Wh

E = 1.2 kWh

now we have total power consumed in 1 year

E = 365 * 1.2 = 438 kWh

cost of electricity = 10 cents/ kWh

so total cost of energy for one year

P_1 = 438 * 10 = 4380 cents = $43.80

total money saved in 1 year

Savings = 87.6 - 43.8 = $43.80
