A hypothetical metal alloy has a grain diameter of 1.7 ´ 10-2 mm. After a heat treatment at 450°C for 250 min the grain diameter

has increased to 4.5 ´ 10-2 mm. Compute the time required for a specimen of this same material (i.e., d0 = 1.7 ´ 10-2 mm) to achieve a grain diameter of 8.7 ´ 10-2 mm while being heated at 450°C. Assume the n grain diameter exponent has a value of 2.1.

Answer:1103 minutes/66180 seconds

Explanation:

FIRST STEP: is to FIND the value of K using the formula below;

K= d^n - d^n(o)/t .....................(1).

Parameters given from the question d^n = 4.5×10^-2 mm, d^n(o)= 1.7 × 10^-2 mm, t= 250 minutes(min) and n= 2.1.

Slotting in the parameters into the equation (1) above,then;

(4.5×10^-2)^2.1 - (1.7×10^-2)^2.1/ 250

= 5.2 × 10^-6 mm^2.1/min.

SECOND STEP: with the value of K from the second step, we can use it to calculate the required time based on the diameter. Therefore, equation (1) becomes;

t= d^2.1 - d^2.1(o)/ K

(8.7×10^-2)^2.1 - (1.7×10^-2)^2.1/ 5.2 × 10^-6

= 1,103 minutes.

Compute the solution to x + 2x + 2x = 0 for Xo = 0 mm, vo = 1 mm/s and write down the closed-form expression for the response.
Nutka1998 [239]

Answer:

β = \frac{c}{\sqrt{km} } =  0.7071 ≈ 1 ( damping condition )

closed-form expression for the response is attached below

Explanation:

Given :  x + 2x + 2x = 0   for Xo = 0 mm and Vo = 1 mm/s

computing a solution :

M = 1,

c = 2,

k = 2,

Wn = \sqrt{\frac{k}{m} }  = \sqrt{2}

next we determine the damping condition using the damping formula

β = \frac{c}{\sqrt{km} } =  0.7071 ≈ 1

from the condition above it can be said that the damping condition indicates underdamping

attached below is the closed form expression for the response

A gear train has two gears. The driver gear has 8 teeth and a diametral pitch of 6 teeth/inch. the follower gear has 24 teeth. W
Sliva [168]

Answer:

18 teeth/inch

Explanation:

Given that: i. driver gear has 8 teeth and diametral pitch of 6 teeth/inch.

                  ii. follower gear has 24 teeth.

Let the followers diametral pitch be represented by x.

Then,

8 teeth ⇒  6 teeth/inch

24 teeth ⇒ x teeth/inch

So that;

x = \frac{24 x 6}{8}

   = \frac{144}{8}

   = 18 teeth/inch

The diametral is 18 teeth/inch

An FPC 4 m2 in area is tested during the night to measure the overall heat loss coefficient. Water at 60 C circulates through th
sp2606 [1]

Answer:

<em> - 14.943 W/m^2K  ( negative sign indicates cooling ) </em>

Explanation:

Given data:

Area of FPC = 4 m^2

temp of water = 60°C

flow rate = 0.06 l/s

ambient temperature = 8°C

exit temperature = 49°C

<u>Calculate the overall heat loss coefficient </u>

Note : heat lost by water = heat loss through convection

m*Cp*dT  = h*A * ( T - To )

∴ dT / T - To = h*A / m*Cp  ( integrate the relation )

In ( \frac{49-8}{60-8} ) =  h* 4 / ( 0.06 * 10^-3 * 1000 * 4180 )

In ( 41 / 52 ) = 0.0159*h

hence h = - 0.2376 / 0.0159

              = - 14.943  W/m^2K  ( heat loss coefficient )
