Using only the information available in the periodic table, consider the elements potassium and bromine. From their location on

the periodic table, identify the oxidation state and number of valence electrons for potassium and bromine. Then use this information to describe their reactivity.
Which statement most accurately describes the compound formed by potassium and bromine?
A) Potassium and bromide form an ionic compound called potassium bromide (KBr).

B) Potassium and bromide form an ionic compound called potassium bromide (K2Br).

C) Potassium and bromide share electrons to form a covalent compound called potassium monobromide (KBr).

D) Potassium and bromide share electrons to form a covalent compound called potassium dibromide (KBr2).

Answer:

A) Potassium and bromide form an ionic compound called potassium bromide (KBr)

Explanation:

We are to identify the oxidation state and Number of electrons.

But what are oxidation state and valence electrons?

The oxidation state, sometimes referred to as oxidation number, describes the degree of oxidation of an atom in a chemical compound. It is a number assigned to an element in chemical combination which represents the number of electrons lost (or gained, if the number is negative), by an atom of that element in the compound.

Valence Electrons on the other hand, refers to the number of electrons in its outermost shell.

Potassium (K) belongs to group 1 and Bromine (Br) belongs to group 7.

In the modern periodic table, elements in the same groups, have the same number of outermost electrons.

This means Valency of K = 1 and valency of Br = 7

Potassium can only lose one electron hence it's oxidation state = +1

Bromine would gain lose one electron hence it's oxidation state = -1

Potassium and Bromine would form an ionic bond due to the transfer of one electron by K and acceptance of one electron by Br. The compound formed is potassium bromide (KBr).

In the balanced equation 4Fe + 3O2 = 2Fe2O3 how many atoms of iron (Fe) are reacting with every three molecules of oxygen (O2)?
Y_Kistochka [10]
This balanced equation shows us the ratios of reactants and products, so for every 3 oxygen molecules, we see that 4 iron atoms react as well. The answer is 4.

The density of mercury is 13.6 g/mL what is the density in lbs/L ( 1 lb hint =0.454 kg )
Vesna [10]

Answer:

30.0\frac{lb}{L}

Explanation:

Hello,

In this case, since 454 g are equivalent to 1 pound and 1000 millilitres are equivalent to 1 liter, the required density is computed below by applying the corresponding conversion factor:

=13.6\frac{g}{mL} *\frac{1lb}{454g} *\frac{1000mL}{1L} \\\\=30.0\frac{lb}{L}

Regards.

4. When the following equation is balanced, what is the coefficient for HCI?
kozerog [31]

Hey there!

Mg + HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂

Balance Cl.

1 on the left, 2 on the right. Add a coefficient of 2 in front of HCl.

Mg + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂

Balance H.

2 on the left, 2 on the right. Already balanced.

Balance Mg.

1 on the left, 1 on the right. Already balanced.

Our final balanced equation: Mg + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂

Hope this helps!

13. What is the symbol for Enthalpy change?
OverLord2011 [107]

Answer:

Explanation:

13 ) symbol of enthalpy change = Δ H .

14 ) enthalpy change is nothing but heat absorbed or evolved .

During fusion enthalpy change

Δ H .= m Lf , m is mass and Ls is latent heat of fusion

During evaporation, enthalpy change

Δ H .= m Lv , m is mass and Lv is latent heat of evaporation

during temperature rise , enthalpy  change

Δ H = m c Δ T

In case of gas , enthalpy change can be calculated by the following relation

Δ H = Δ E + W , Δ E is change in internal energy , W is work done by gas.

15 ) When enthalpy change is negative , that means heat is released to the environment .So reaction is called exothermic .

when heat is absorbed enthalpy change is positive . Reaction is endothermic.
