A man stands on a platform that is rotating (without friction) with an angular speed of 1.2 rev/s; his arms are outstretched and

he holds a brick in each had. The rotational inertia of the system consisting of the man, bricks, and platform about the central vertical axis of the platform is 6.0 kgm2. If by moving the bricks the man decreases the rotational inertia of the system to 2.0 kgm2, what are (a) the resulting angular speed of the platform and (b) the ratio of the new kinetic energy of the system to the original kinetic energy?

Answer:

A. ω₂ = 3.6rev/s

B. K₂ / K₁ = 3

Explanation:

Data;

ω₁ = 1.2rev/s

I₁ = 6.0kgm²

ω₂ = ?

I₂ = 2.0kgm²

for conservation of angular momentum,

Initial angular momentum = final angular momentum

L₁ = L₂

I₁ω₁ = I₂ω₂

solving for ω₂,

ω₂ = (I₁ * ω₁) / I₂

ω₂ = (6.0 * 1.2) / 2.0

ω₂ = 3.6rev/s

the resulting angular speed of the platform is 3.6rev/s.

b. the ratio of the new kinetic energy to the system kinetic energy

let the new kinetic energy = K₂

original kinetic energy = K₁

Kinetic energy of a rotational body = ½*Iω²

K₂ / K₁ = ½ I₁ω₁² = ½I₂ω²

K₂ / K₁ = I₁ω₁² / I₂ω₂²

K₂ / K₁ = (2.0 * 3.6²) / (6.0 * 1.2²)

K₂ / K₁ = 25.92 / 8.64

K₂ / K₁ = 3

The ratio of the new kinetic energy to the old kinetic energy is 3.

A ball of radius R and mass m is magically put inside a thin shell of the same mass and radius 2R. The system is at rest on a ho
dlinn [17]

Answer:

x =\frac{-R}{2}

Explanation:

From the question we are told that mass

Thin layer radius = 2R

Generally the expression for ths solution is given as

Xcm =(m*0 =m(-2R))/2m =-mR/(2m)=-R/2

the center of mass will not move at initial state

Considering the center of mass of both bodies

xcm=\frac{m*x+m*x)}{2m} =x

x =\frac{-R}{2}

Therefore the enclosing layer moves x =\frac{-R}{2}

A flat coil of wire consisting of 20 turns, each with an area of 50 cm2, is positioned perpendicularly to a uniform magnetic fie
Nutka1998 [239]

Answer:

i = 0.5 A

Explanation:

As we know that magnetic flux is given as

\phi = NBA

here we know that

N = number of turns

B = magnetic field

A = area of the loop

now we know that rate of change in magnetic flux will induce EMF in the coil

so we have

EMF = NA\frac{dB}{dt}

now plug in all values to find induced EMF

EMF = (20)(50 \times 10^{-4})(\frac{6 - 2}{2})

EMF = 0.2 volts

now by ohm's law we have

current = \frac{EMF}{Resistance}

i = \frac{0.2}{0.40} = 0.5 A

A big lump of meat of mass 5Kg is hung from a spring balance in an elevator. Find the reading of the balance of (I) the elevator
Mrrafil [7]

The reading of the balance if ,

I ) If the elevator is moving with a steady speed = 50 N

II ) If the elevator is moving upwards with acceleration of 0.2 m / s² = 51 N

T = m g + m a

T = Force

m = Mass

g = Acceleration due to gravity

a = Acceleration

m = 5 kg

g = 10 m / s²

I ) If the elevator is moving with a steady speed,

At steady speed, a = 0

T = ( 5 * 10 ) + ( 5 * 0 )

T = 50 N

II ) If the elevator is moving upwards with acceleration of 0.2 m / s²,

a = 0.2 m / s²

T = ( 5 * 10 ) + ( 5 * 0.2 )

T = 50 + 1

T = 51 N

Therefore, the reading of the balance if ,

I ) If the elevator is moving with a steady speed = 50 N

II ) If the elevator is moving upwards with acceleration of 0.2 m / s² = 51 N
