You are an engineer in charge of designing a new generation of elevators for a prospective upgrade to the Empire State Building.

Before the state legislature votes on funding for the project, they would like you to prepare a report on the benefits of upgrading the elevators. One of the numbers that they have requested is the time it will take the elevator to go from the ground floor to the 102nd floor observatory. They are unlikely to approve the project unless the new elevators make the trip much faster than the old elevators. If state law mandates that elevators cannot accelerate more than 2.40 m/s2 or travel faster than 18.8 m/s , what is the minimum time in which an elevator can travel the 373 m from the ground floor to the observatory floor

Answer:

   t_total = 23.757 s

Explanation:

This is a kinematics exercise.

Let's start by calculating the distance and has to reach the limit speed of

v = 18.8 m / s

         v = v₀ + a t₁

the elevator starts with zero speed

         v = a t₁

         t₁ = v / a

         t₁ = 18.8 / 2.40

         t₁ = 7.833 s

in this time he runs

         y₁ = v₀ t₁ + ½ a t₁²

         y₁ = ½ a t₁²

         y₁ = ½ 2.40 7.833²

         y₁ = 73.627 m

This is the time and distance traveled until reaching the maximum speed, which will be constant throughout the rest of the trip.

           x_total = x₁ + x₂

           x₂ = x_total - x₁

           x₂ = 373 - 73,627

           x₂ = 299.373 m

this distance travels at constant speed,

           v = x₂ / t₂

           t₂ = x₂ / v

           t₂ = 299.373 / 18.8

           t₂ = 15.92 s

therefore the total travel time is

           t_total = t₁ + t₂

           t_total = 7.833 + 15.92

           t_total = 23.757 s

A friend claims that throwing a baseball up towards the school roof illustrates gravitational potential energy transforming into
Cloud [144]

Answer:

The Statement is wrong because the reverse is the case as it is the  kinetic energy that is being transformed to gravitational potential energy.

Explanation:

As your friend throws  the baseball into the air the ball gains an initial velocity (u) and this makes the Kinetic energy to be equal to

                    KE = \frac{1}{2} mu^2

Here  m is the mass of the baseball

       Now as this ball moves further upward the that velocity it gained reduce due to the gravitational force and this in turn reduces the kinetic energy of the ball and this kinetic energy lost is being converted to gravitational potential energy which is mathematically represented as (m×g×h)

as energy can not be destroyed but converted to a different form according to the first law of thermodynamics

Looking a the formula for gravitational potential energy we see that the higher the ball goes the grater the gravitational potential energy.

What kind of eruption is likely to occur in a volcano having magma that is low in silica
Masja [62]
A volcano erupts quietly if it's magma is low on silica. Low silica magma will be very thin, runny, and will flow easily, so the gases in the magma will bubble out gently. Hope this helps!:)

At 20°c, the resistance of a sample of nickel is 525 ohms. what is the resistance when the sample is heated to 70°C?
Ipatiy [6.2K]

The resistance of the sample is 682.5\Omega

Explanation:

The relationship between resistance of a material and temperature is given by the equation

R(T)=R_0(1+\alpha (T-T_0))

where

R_0 is the resistance at the temperature T_0

\alpha is the temperature coefficient of resistance

For the sample of nickel in this problem, we have:

R_0 = 525 \Omega when the temperature is T_0 = 20^{\circ}C

While the temperature coefficient of resistance of nickel is

\alpha = 0.006/^{\circ}C

Therefore, the resistance of the sample when its temperature is

T=70^{\circ}C

is

R=(525)(1+0.006(70-20))=682.5 \Omega
