From the standpoint of entropy, consider the following processes: water boiling, mixing cola and root beer sodas, and assembling

a house of cards. Based on your understanding, which of the following statements is true?A. Water boiling is a favorable process, but mixing cola and root beer sodas and assembling a house of cards are not.B. Water boiling and mixing cola and root beer sodas are favorable processes, but assembling a house of cards is not.C. Water boiling and mixing cola and root beer sodas are not favorable processes, but assembling a house of cards is.D. All of the listed processes are favorable.

Answer:

Correct answer is B

Explanation:

Entropy can be defined as a measure of the degree of randomness or disorderliness of a system. it is represented by S and a change by delta-S.

The standard entropy change is a state function because it is dependent on the initial and final states of the system.  The SI unit of entropy is J/K

It should be noted that entropy increases from the SOLID to LIQUID to GASEOUS state. i.e randomness or disorderliness increases as such Delta S is POSITIVE and Decreases from GASEOUS to LIQUID to SOLID as such Delta S is negative.

Hence a positive value of entropy shows a spontaneous reaction hence favorable, while a negative value shows a non spontaneous reaction, hence not favorable.

Applying the explanation to each of the options.

In option A) Water boiling is a favorable process, but mixing cola and root beer sodas and assembling a house of cards are not. In assembling house of cards, there is a decrease in entropy, since the final states is lesser than the initial states hence NOT FAVORABLE.

In option B) Water boiling and mixing cola and root beer sodas are favorable processes, but assembling a house of cards is not.

Yes water boiling is a favorable process because it changes states from liquid to gaseous state which is an increase in the rate of disorderliness. likewise mixing cola and beer sodas, since there will be an increase in the randomness of the system hence favorable. Hence the statement is TRUE

In option C) Water boiling and mixing cola and root beer sodas are not favorable processes, but assembling a house of cards is. Here the statement is false as explained that water boiling and mixing cola and root beer sodas are favorable processes, while assembling house of cards is not.

In option D) All of the listed processes are favorable. This is a false statement because not all the processes are favorable, only Water boiling and mixing cola and root beer sodas are favorable processes, while assembling house of cards is not favorable.

From the analysis, the only TRUE and correct option is Option B

Holly has an unknown substance in a beaker. she wants to determine the relative ph of the unknown substance. she places a piece
AURORKA [14]

Blue litmus paper turns red in the presence of an acid. Therefore, it can be assumed that the substance in the beaker is an acid.

Acids have a pH level of less than 7. Consequently, it can be assumed that the substance has a pH level less than 7.
