Determine the number of unpaired electrons in Ca?

Chemistry
1 answer:
serg [7]3 years ago
3 0

When an electron occupies an orbital of an atom singly, rather than an electron pair such electron is said to be an unpaired electron. Each atomic orbital of an atom specified by quantum numbers can contain a maximum of two electrons having opposite spins, electron pair.

The numbers of unpaired electrons are determined by the electronic configuration of an atom. The electronic configuration of calcium, Ca is:

1s^{2}2s^{2}2p^{6}3s^{2}3p^{6}4s^{2} or [Ar]4s^{2}

Since, from the electronic configuration it is clear that the number of electrons in valence orbital that is 4s is 2 that means the electrons are paired up in the valence orbital so, there are no unpaired electrons present in Ca.

Hence, the number of unpaired electrons in Ca is 0.

Which of the following is not a characteristic of a metal?
jolli1 [7]

Answer:

B. Poor conductor.

Explanation:

It cannot be A, as only 1 metal is not solid at room temp.

It cannot be C, as most metals are ductile.

It cannot be D, as most metals are malleable.

This leaves B, which is not true about metals, as a lot are very good conductors.

50.3 mol KCl (Potassium chloride)

<u>Step 2: Identify Conversions</u>

Avogadro's Number

<u>Step 3: Convert</u>

<u />\displaystyle 50.3 \ mol \ KCl(\frac{6.022 \cdot 10^{23} \ formula \ units \ KCl}{1 \ mol \ KCl} ) = 3.02907 × 10²⁵ formula units KCl

<u>Step 4: Check</u>

<em>We are given 3 sig figs. Follow sig fig rules and round.</em>

3.02907 × 10²⁵ formula units KCl ≈ 3.03 × 10²⁵ formula units KCl
