A 2 m3 rigid tank initially contains air at 100 kPa and 22 degrees C. The tank is connected to a supply line through a valve. Ai

r is flowing in the supply line at 600 kPa and 22 degrees C. The valve is opened, and air is allowed to enter the tank until the pressure in the tank reaches the line pressure, at which point the valve is closed. A thermometer placed in the tank indicates that the air temperature at the final state is 77 degrees C. Determine a) the mass of air that has entered the tank and b) the amount of heat transfer.

Answer:

a. 9.58kgs b. 340.32KJ

Explanation:

Volume of tank= 2m³

Initial Pressure Pi= 100KPa

Initial Temperature Ti= 22 C= 295K

Line Pressure P₁= 600 KPa

Line Temperature T= 22 C= 295K

Final Pressure P2= 600 KPa

Final Temperature T2= 77 C= 350K

Use Ideal Gas Equation

PV= mRT

P₁V₁= m₁RT₁

m₁= (100 x 2)/(0.287 x 295) = 2.3622kg

P₂V₂= m₂RT₂

m₂= (600 x 2)/(0.287 x 350) = 11.946 kg

Since valve is closed and no mass leave

m₁ + mi = m₂ + me

as per above condition me= 0

mi= m₂ - m₁ = 11.946 - 2.3622 = 9.5838kg

Applying energy equation

m₁u₁ + mihi + Q = m₂u₂ + mehe + W

me and W=0

m₁u₁ + mihi + Q = m₂u₂

m₁CvT₁ + miCpTi + Q =  m₂CvT₂

Q =   m₂CvT₂- m₁CvT₁ - miCpTi

Q = (11.946 x 0.717 350) - (2.3622 x 0.717 x 295) - (9.5868 x 1.004 x 295)

Q = -340.321 KJ (Negative sign doesn't matter as energy is not a vector quantity)

Ultimate tensile strength is: (a) The stress at 0.2% strain (b) The stress at the onset of plastic deformation (c) The stress at
MissTica

Answer:

By definition the ultimate tensile strength is the maximum stress in the stress-strain deformation. The stress at 0.2% strain, the stress at the onset of plastic deformation, the stress at the end of the elastic deformation and the stress at the fracture correspond, by definition, to other points of the stress-strain curve.

A metal bar has a 0.6 in. x 0.6 in. cross section and a gauge length of 2 in. The bar is loaded with a tensile force of 50,000 l
Aleks [24]

Answer:

modulus =3.97X10^6 Ib/in^2, Poisson's ratio = 0.048

Explanation:

Modulus is the ratio of tensile stress to tensile strain

Poisson's ratio is the ratio of transverse contraction strain to longitudinal extension strain within the direction of the stretching force

And contraction occur from 0.6 in x 0.6 in to 0.599 in x 0.599 in while 2 in extended to 2.007, with extension of 0.007 in

A center-point bending test was performed on a 2 in. x d in. wood lumber according to ASTM D198 procedure with a span of 4 ft an
Zigmanuir [339]

Answer:

3.03 INCHES

Explanation:

According to ASTM D198 ;

Modulus of rupture = ( M / I ) * y  ----- ( 1 )

M ( bending moment ) = R * length of span / 2

                                     = (120 * 10^3 ) * 48 / 2 = 288 * 10^4 Ib-in

I ( moment of inertia ) = bd^3 / 12

                                    = ( 2 )*( d )^3  / 12 =  2d^3 / 12

b = 2 in ,  d = ?

length of span = 4 * 12 = 48 inches

R = P  / 2 =  240 * 10^3 / 2 =   120 * 10^3 Ib

y ( centroid distance ) = d / 2  inches

back to equation ( 1 )

( M / I ) * y

940.3 ksi = ( 288 * 10^4 / 2d^3 / 12 ) * d / 2

                = ( 288 * 10^4 * 12 ) / 2d^3 )  * d / 2

940300  = 34560000* d / 4d^3

4d^3 ( 940300 ) = 34560000 d  ( divide both sides with d )

4d^2 = 34560000 / 940300

d^2 = 9.188   ∴ Value of d ≈ 3.03 in
