Hurricanes are especially destructive because of the abrupt decrease in air pressure that they bring with the winds. Consider a

house which is airtight, and has a pressure of 1.02 atm when a hurricane hits. Outside, external air pressure quickly falls to 0.91. What net force (directed outwards) is exerted on a 1.63 m by 1.63 m window on the house? (Answer should be in SI units, rounded off to nearest whole number).

Answer:

2.96 × 10^4 N

Explanation:

1 atm = 101325 N/m², pressure inside the airtight room = 1.02 atm, pressure outside due to hurricane = 0.91 atm

net pressure directed outward = P inside - P  outside

net pressure = 1.02 - 0.91 = 0.11 atm

where 1 atm = 101325N/m²

0.11 atm = 0.11 × 101325 N/m² = 11145.75 N/m²

area of the square wall = l × l where l is the length of the wall in meters = 1.63 × 1.63 = 2.6569

net pressure = net force / area

make net force subject of the formula

net force = net pressure × area = 11145.75 × 2.6569 = 2.96 × 10 ^4 N

Find the distance traveled in one back-and-forth swing by the weight of a 12 in. Pendulum that swings through a 75 degree angle.
tia_tia [17]

The distance traveled by pendulum, in one back-and-forth swing is 75.75 inches.

The period of pendulum can be calculated by

T = 2\pi \sqrt {\dfrac Lg}

Where,

T - period

L - length = 12 inches

g- gravitational acceleration  = \bold {9.8\rm \ m/s^2}

Put the values,

T = 2\pi \sqrt {\dfrac {12}{9.8}}\\\\T = 2 \times 3.14 \times \sqrt {0.122}\\\\T = 2.191

Now, the angular displacement of the pendulum can be calculated by,

\theta = A\times\rm \  cos(\omega T)

Where,

A- amplitude

\theta - angle  = 75^o

\omega - angular displacement = 2\pi/T = 2.866 m

Put the values and calculate for \omega,

75 = A\times{\rm \  cos}(2.866\times 2.191)\\\\75 =A \times cos\ 6.26\\\\A =\dfrac {75}{0.99}\\\\A = 75.75 \rm \ inches

Therefore, the distance traveled by pendulum, in one back-and-forth swing is 75.75 inches.

A car owner forgets to turn off the headlights of his car while it is parked in his garage. If the 12.0-V battery in his car is
luda_lava [24]

Answer:

It will take time=7.963 hours to completely discharge

Explanation:

The energy available in the battery is:

Energy stored=Power×Time

Energy stored=(ΔV)I×t

Energy stored=(12.0V×43.0A.h)

Energy stored=516 W.h

The two headlights together consume a total power of:

P=2*32.4W\\P=64.8W

So the time required to completely discharge is:

time=\frac{Energy.stored}{P}\\ time=\frac{516 W.h}{64.8W}\\ time=7.963hours

It will take time=7.963 hours to completely discharge
