Consider a circuit in which the left half-cell was prepared by dipping a Pt wire in a beaker containing an equimolar mixture of

Cr2+ and Cr3+. The right half-cell contained a Tl rod immersed in1.00 MTlClO4.
(a) Usetheline notation to describe this cell.
(b) Calculate the cell voltage.
(c) Write the spontaneous net cell reaction.
(d) When the two electrodes are connected by a salt bridge and a wire, which terminal (Pt or Tl) will be the anode?

Answer:

a) Ti⁻²|Ti || Pt|Pt⁻²

b) +2.83 V

c) Pt + Ti⁻² → Pt⁻² + Ti

d) Pt

Explanation:

a) In the cell circuit, a redox reaction will happen, and one of the electrodes will oxide (it will lose electrons) and the other will reduce (it will gain electrons). The potential to reduce is measured by the standard potential reduction (E°). As higher is it, as easy is to the reduction reaction happens. The values for Pt and Ti are:

Pt + 2e⁻ → Pt⁻² E° = +1.20 V

Ti + 2e⁻ → Ti⁻² E° = -1.63 V

So, Pt will reduce and Ti will oxide. The oxidation reaction is the opposite of the reduction, and at the line notation, first is placed the oxidation reaction, thus:

Ti⁻²|Ti || Pt|Pt⁻²

b) The cell voltage (ΔE°) is the E° of the reduction reaction less the E° of the oxidation reaction:

ΔE° = 1.20 - (-1.63)

ΔE° = +2.83 V

c) The spontaneous net cell reaction will be the sum of the reduction reaction and the oxidation:

Pt + 2e⁻ → Pt⁻² (reduction)

Ti⁻² → Ti + 2e⁻ (oxidation)

----------------------------

Pt + Ti⁻² → Pt⁻² + Ti

d) In the cell, the electrodes are called cathode and anode. The electrode where the oxidation occurs is the anode, and the other, where the reduction occurs, is the cathode. Thus, in this case, the Pt electrode is the anode.

Three mixtures were prepared from three very narrow molar mass distribution polystyrene samples with molar masses of 10,000, 30,
8_murik_8 [283]

Answer:

(a). 46,666.7 g/mol; 78,571.4 g/mol

(b). 86950g/mol; 46,666.7 g/mol.

(c). 86950g/mol; 43,333.33 g/mol

Explanation:

So, we are given the molar masses for the three samples as: 10,000, 30,000 and 100,000 g mol−1.

Thus, the equal number of molecule in each sample = ( 10,000 + 30,000 + 100,000 ) / 3 = 46,666.7 g/mol.

The average molar mass = [ ( 10,000)^2 + (30,000)^2 + 100,000)^2] ÷ 10,000 + 30,000 + 100,000 = 78,571. 4 g/mol.

(b). The equal masses of each sample = 3/[ ( 1/ 10,000) + (1/30,000 ) + (1/100,000) ] = 20930.23 g/mol.

Average molar mass = ( 10,000 + 30,000 + 100,000 ) / 3 = 46,666.7 g/mol.

(c). Equal masses of the two samples = (0.145 × 10,000) + (0.855 × 100,000)/ 0.145 + 0.855 = 86950g/mol.

The weight average molar mass = 1.7 + 10,000 + 100,000/ 1.7 + 1 = 43,333.33 g/mol.

If Carl buys a 946 ml bottle of rubbing alcohol, how much of the aqueous solution is water?
Darina [25.2K]

The question is incomplete, here is the complete question:

A bottle of rubbing alcohol having aqueous solution of alcohol contains 70% (v/v) alcohol. If Carl buys a 946 ml bottle of rubbing alcohol, how much of the aqueous solution is water?

Answer: The amount of water present in the given bottle of rubbing alcohol is 283.8 mL

Explanation:

We are given:

Volume of bottle of rubbing alcohol = 946 mL

70% (v/v) alcohol solution

This means that 70 mL of rubbing alcohol is present in 100 mL of solution

Amount of water present in solution = [100 - 70] = 30 mL

Applying unitary method:

In 100 mL of solution, the amount of water present is 30 mL

So, in 946 mL of solution, the amount of water present will be = \frac{30}{100}\times 946=283.8mL

Hence, the amount of water present in the given bottle of rubbing alcohol is 283.8 mL

What’s the correct answer
Fed [463]
The correct answer is:
_________________________________________________________
" F and Br , because they are in the same group" .
_________________________________________________________
Note:
_________________________________________________________
Choice [B]: "F and Br ; because they are in the same period" ; is incorrect; since "F" and "Br" are not in the same "period" (that is, "row").
______________________________________________________
Choice [C]: "Na and Mg; because they are in the same group {"column"} ; is incorrect; since: "Na" and "Mg are NOT in the same group {"column"].
_______________________________________________________
Choice [D]: "Na and Mg" ; because they are in the same period {"row"}; is incorrect. Note: "Na" and "Mg" are, in fact, in the same period {"row"}. However, as aforementioned, {Mg and Na} are not in the same group {"column".}.

Note: The similiarities in physical and chemistry properties among elements are determined and organized — or tend to be so—by "groups" {"columns"} — NOT by "periods" {rows}.
