a) The momentum of the coconut is 3 kg m/s

b) At first, the air resistance is negligible, so the coconut accelerates due to the force of gravity

c) The coconut reaches its terminal velocity

Explanation:

a)

The momentum of an object is given by the equation

p=mv

where

m is the mass of the object

v is its velocity

For the coconut in this problem, we have:

m = 1.5 kg (mass)

v = 2 m/s (velocity)

Therefore, its momentum is

p=(1.5)(2)=3 kg m/s

B)

There are only two forces acting on the coconut during its fall:

 • The force of gravity, of magnitude mg (m= mass of the coconut, g = acceleration of gravity), acting downward
 • The air resistance, acting upward, whose magnitude is proportional to the speed of the coconut

During the first momentums of the fall, the speed of the coconut is still low, so the air resistance is mostly negligible, and therefore only the force of gravity is acting on the coconut. Since this force is constant, it means that the acceleration of the coconut is constant: therefore, its velocity keeps increasing during the fall, and the coconut speeds up.

C)

If the tree is very tall, the fall of the coconut lasts long, and the speed of the coconut keeps increasing. Since the air resistance is proportional to the speed, this means that at some point, the air resistance is no longer negligible, and it starts to have some effect on the fall of the coconut. In particular, at a certain point, the air resistance will become equal (in magnitude) to the force of gravity (but opposite in direction): this means that from this point, the acceleration of the coconut will be zero, and therefore the coconut will continue its motion at constant velocity. This velocity is called terminal velocity, and it occurs when the force of gravity is equal to the air resistance:

mg = F_r

where F_r is the air resistance.

Two or more velocities add by ____?

Plz help
VladimirAG [237]
By vector addition.
In fact, velocity is a vector, with a magnitude intensity, a direction and a verse, so we can't simply do an algebraic sum of the two (or more velocities).
First we need to decompose each velocity on both x- and y-axis (if we are on a 2D-plane), then we should do the algebraic sum of all the components on the x- axis and of all the components on the y-axis, to find the resultants on x- and y-axis. And finally, the magnitude of the resultant will be given by
R= \sqrt{(R_x)^2+(R_y)^2}
where Rx and Rx are the resultants on x- and y-axis. The direction of the resultant will be given by
\tan \alpha = \frac{R_y}{R_x}
where \alpha is its direction with respect to the x-axis.

A box is at rest on a ramp at an incline of 22°. The normal force on the box is 538 N.
fomenos

Answer: 580 N

Refer to attached figure.

The angle of inclination is 22 degrees

weight (gravitational force) acts downwards.

Normal force is a contact force which acts perpendicular to the point of contact.

The horizontal component (mg cos 22 ) balances the normal force and the vertical component balances the frictional force.

Gravitational force on an object = mg

The normal force N= mg cos 22

\Rightarrow mg =\frac{N}{cos22}=\frac{538 N}{0.927}=580 N

The human ear is sometimes called a Fourier analyzer. What does this mean and why is it an apt description? 1. Our ears can sort
tamaranim1 [39]

Answer:

1. Our ears can sort out the individual sine waves from a mixture of two or more sine waves, so we hear the pure tones that make up a complex tone.

Explanation:

A complex tone is a sound wave that consist of two or more forms of audible sound frequencies. Sound wave is a mechanical wave that is longitudinal, and could be represented by a sine wave because of it sinusoidal manner of propagation.

A Fourier analyzer can be used to differentiate individual sine waves from a combination of two or more of it; which is as the same function performed by human ear. To the human ear, a sound wave that consist of more than one sine wave will have perceptible harmonics which would be distorted and turn to a noise.

Thus, the human ear makes it possible to hear the pure tones that make up a complex tone.
