In grinding a steel knife blade (specific heat = 0.11 cal/g-c),the metal can get as hot as 400C. If the blade has a mass of 80g,

what is the minimum amount of water needed at 20C if the water isnot to rise above the boiling point when the hot blade is quenchedin it?

Answer:

33 g.

Explanation:

Assuming no heat transfer can be possible except for heat exchange between water and steel, we can say that the heat lost by the knife, must be equal to the heat gained by the water.

As we have a limit for the maximum temperature of both elements (once reached a final thermal equilibrium), of 100ºC, which means that the maximum allowable change in temperature will be of 300º C for the knife, and of 80º C for the water.

Empirically , it has been showed that for a heat exchange process using only conduction, the heat needed to raise the temperature of a body, is proportional to the mass, being the proportionality constant a factor that depends on the material, called specific heat.

So, we can write the following equation:

cs*mk*Δtk = cw*mw*Δtw

Replacing by the givens of the question, we have:

0.11 cal/gºC * 80 g * 300ºC = 1 cal/gºC*mw*80ºC

Solving for mw = 2,640 cal / 80 cal/g =33 g.

alexandr402 [8]

Answer:

Mariah trained for months leading up to the marathon and won. Her sole motivation was that after seeing her winning the marathon, her friends and family would call her as motivated and athletic. It means that Mariah wanted to fulfill her esteem needs.

Explanation:

According to Abraham Maslow:

Safety needs includes the personal security, the safety of health, resources and property. etc.

Physiological needs falls at the lowest level of basic needs. It includes food, water, rest. etc which are necessary for an individual's survival.

Esteem includes the need of respect and self-confidence.

Cognitive needs includes the desire of knowledge, to know things, to know what is happening and why is it happening around you.

In Mariah's case, she needed respect and motivation and thus she was trying to fulfill her esteem needs by winning the marathon.

A bus took 8 hours to travel 639 km. For the first 5 hours, it
vladimir1956 [14]

Answer:

93 km/h

Explanation:

Given that a bus took 8 hours to travel 639 km. For the first 5 hours, it travelled at an average speed of 72 km/h

Let the first 5 hours journey distance = F

From the formula of speed,

Speed = distance/time

Substitute speed and time

72 = F/5

F = 72 × 5 = 360 km

The remaining distance will be:

639 - 360 = 279km

The remaining time will be:

8 - 5 = 3 hours

Speed = 279/3

Speed = 93 km/h

Therefore, the average speed for the remaining time of the journey is equal to 93 km/h

A wire with a length of 150 m and a radius of 0.15 mm carries a current with a uniform current density of 2.8 x 10^7A/m^2. The c
Mrac [35]

Answer:

The current is 2.0 A.

(A) is correct option.

Explanation:

Given that,

Length = 150 m

Radius = 0.15 mm

Current densityJ=2.8\times10^{7}\ A/m^2

We need to calculate the current

Using formula of current density

J = \dfrac{I}{A}

I=J\timesA

Where, J = current density

A = area

I = current

Put the value into the formula

I=2.8\times10^{7}\times\pi\times(0.15\times10^{-3})^2

I=1.97=2.0\ A

Hence, The current is 2.0 A.
