According to nebula gas theory, the Sun and all the planets of our Solar System began as a giant cloud of molecular gas and dust called solar nebula. Then, about 4.57 billion years ago, something happened that caused the cloud to collapse.

A shock wave from a nearby supernova explosion probably initiated the collapse of the solar nebula. The Sun formed in the center, and the planets formed in a thin disk orbiting around it.

Nebular Hypothesis: a widely accepted model. Originally formulated in 1755 by a German Philosopher Immanuel Kan. Its subsequent development has interwoven a variety of scientific disciplines including astronomy, physics, geology, and planetary science.
