A student is given five samples and told they are lysine (an amino acid), lactose (a disaccharide), insulin (a protein hormone),

RNA and fat. The samples are in test tubes marked 1-5, but the student doesn’t know which compound is in which tube. The student is instructed to identify the contents of each tube. In her first test, she tries to hydrolyze a portion of the contents of each tube. Hydrolysis occurs in all tubes except tube 5. In the next test, she finds that tubes 3, 4, and 5 are positive for nitrogen but only tube 3 gives a positive result for the presence of sulfur. In the next test the student shows that the compound in tube 4 contains a high percentage of phosphate. In the final test the student shows that compound 1 is hydrophobic. Base on these data, identify what is in each tube.

Answer:

The Content in the tubes is:

tube 1:<em> Fat</em>

<em>tube 2: Lactose</em>

tube 3: Insulin

tube 4: RNA

tube 5: Lysine

Explanation:

tube 1: Fat is always not compatible with water it means hydrophobic

tube 2: For rejection of the other tubes the last molecule to assigned a tube is lactose due to we do not have a specific test information for tube 2

tube 3: The insulin has a two disulfide bonds and is the only molecule with sulphur atoms.

tube 4: The nitrogen based compounds that belongs to the RNA are binded with phosphate groups all around its chain, so the presence of phosphate indicates that is RNA.

tube 5: Because was the only one who does not hydrolyse it is an aminoacid.

finally it says that in the tubes 3, 4 and 5 has nitrogen, the only 3 compound with nitrogen are Lysine, insulin and RNA.

A laboratory analysis of a sample finds it is composed of 38.8% carbon, 16.2% hydrogen, and 45.1% nitrogen. What is its empirica
Sladkaya [172]

Answer: The empirical formula for the given compound is CH_5N

Explanation : Given,

Percentage of C = 38.8 %

Percentage of H = 16.2 %

Percentage of N = 45.1 %

Let the mass of compound be 100 g. So, percentages given are taken as mass.

Mass of C = 38.8 g

Mass of H = 16.2 g

Mass of N = 45.4 g

To formulate the empirical formula, we need to follow some steps:

Step 1: Converting the given masses into moles.

Moles of Carbon =\frac{\text{Given mass of Carbon}}{\text{Molar mass of Carbon}}=\frac{38.8g}{12g/mole}=3.23moles

Moles of Hydrogen = \frac{\text{Given mass of Hydrogen}}{\text{Molar mass of Hydrogen}}=\frac{16.2g}{1g/mole}=16.2moles

Moles of Nitrogen = \frac{\text{Given mass of nitrogen}}{\text{Molar mass of nitrogen}}=\frac{45.4g}{14g/mole}=3.24moles

Step 2: Calculating the mole ratio of the given elements.

For the mole ratio, we divide each value of the moles by the smallest number of moles calculated which is 3.23 moles.

For Carbon = \frac{3.23}{3.23}=1

For Hydrogen  = \frac{16.2}{3.23}=5.01\approx 5

For Oxygen  = \frac{3.24}{3.23}=1.00\approx 1

Step 3: Taking the mole ratio as their subscripts.

The ratio of C : H : N = 1 : 5 : 1

Hence, the empirical formula for the given compound is C_1H_5N_1=CH_5N

Determine the number of molecules in 0.0500 mole of boron tribromide<br> (show work)
OleMash [197]

Answer:

There are 0.5 moles

Explanation:

According to avogadro's law, 1 mole of every substance occupies 22.4 L at STP and contains avogadro's number  of particles.

To calculate the moles, we use the equation:

Thus there are 0.5 moles
