Answer:

                 a) If the solvent-solute interactions in a mixture are stronger than the solvent-solvent interactions and the solute-solute interactions, a homogeneous solution forms.

                 b) If the solvent-solute interactions in a mixture are weaker than the solvent-solvent interactions and the solute-solute interactions, the formation of a homogeneous solution is uncertain.

Explanation:

The solubility of solute in given solvent mainly depends upon the intermolecular interactions between the solvent and the solute. If the solute is surrounded and solvated by the solvent then the solute will dissolve in that solvent. Therefore, in order to dissolve the solute must form stronger interactions with the solvent as compared to the solute solute interactions or solvent solvent interactions.

Example:

When NaCl is added to water the partial negative oxygen of water is attracted to Na⁺ of NaCl and the partial positive hydrogen of water is attracted to Cl⁻ of NaCl. These new interactions between the NaCl ions and water are stronger than the interactions between water molecules and NaCl molecules themselves hence, results in solubility of NaCl in water.

On the other hand, if NaCl is added to Hexane (C₆H₁₄) it fails to make strong interactions with the solvent molecules resulting in insolubility of NaCl in hexane.

Igoryamba
The balanced chemical reaction is:

Zn + 2AgNO3 = Zn(NO3)2 + 2Ag

To determine the amount of the reactant left, we have to determine which is the limiting and the excess reactant. We do as follows:

5.65 g Zn ( 1 mol / 65.38 g) = 0.09 mol Zn
21.6 g AgNO3 (1 mol / 169.87 g) = 0.13 mol AgNO3

The limiting reactant would be silver nitrate since it is consumed completely in the reaction. The excess reactant would be zinc.

Excess Zinc = 0.09 mol Zn - (0.13 / 2) mol Zn = 0.025 mol Zn left

Archy [21]
The concept used here is the Le Chatelier's principle. When a disturbance is introduced to the system, it favors the direction of reaction that minimizes the disturbance to regain equilibrium.

In endothermic reactions, the forward reaction is favored when the temperature is low. Otherwise, the reverse reaction is favored. When you add the amounts of substances on the reactant side, more products would formed favoring the forward reaction. If you increase concentration on the product side, you form more reactants so it would favor the reverse reaction. Lastly, since 10 moles of gases are needed in the reactant side, it would be favored during high pressure reaction.

Which type of weathering helped to form barrier islands
Grace [21]

Barrier islands typically have sand in the beach zone and dune field, and mud in the back-barrier. Overwash deposits sand in the back-barrier.

Barrier islands form in three ways. They can form from spits, from drowned dune ridges or from sand bars. Longshore drift is the movement of sand parallel to the shore caused by the angle of the waves breaking on the beach. ... When a storm such as a hurricane digs an inlet through the spit a barrier island is formed.
