<u>Answer:</u> The molality of solution is 0.122 m and molar mass of unknown substance is 128.16 g/mol

<u>Explanation:</u>

  • To calculate the depression in freezing point, we use the equation:

\Delta T_f=iK_fm

where,

\Delta T_f = depression in freezing point = 2.50°C

i = Vant hoff factor = 1 (For non-electrolytes)

K_f = molal freezing point elevation constant = 20.5°C/m

m = molality of solution = ?

Putting values in above equation, we get:

2.50^oC=1\times 20.5^oC/m\times m\\\\m=\frac{2.50}{1\times 20.5}=0.122m

  • To calculate the mass of cyclohexane, we use the equation:

\text{Density of substance}=\frac{\text{Mass of substance}}{\text{Volume of substance}}

Density of cyclohexane = 0.779 g/mL

Volume of cyclohexane = 20.0 mL

Putting values in above equation, we get:

0.779g/mL=\frac{\text{Mass of cyclohexane}}{20.0mL}\\\\\text{Mass of cyclohexane}=(0.779g/mL\times 20.0mL)=15.58g

  • To calculate the molar mass of substance for given molality, we use the equation:

\text{Molality of solution}=\frac{m_{solute}\times 1000}{M_{solute}\times W_{solvent}\text{ (in grams)}}

where,

m_{solute} = Given mass of solute = 0.2436 g

M_{solute} = Molar mass of solute = ? g/mol

W_{solvent} = Mass of solvent (cyclohexane) = 15.58 g

Molality of solution = 0.122 m

Putting values in above equation, we get:

0.122=\frac{0.2436\times 1000}{M_{solute}\times 15.58}\\\\M_{solute}=\frac{0.2436\times 1000}{0.122\times 15.58}=128.16g/mol

Hence, the molality of solution is 0.122 m and molar mass of unknown substance is 128.16 g/mol

Calculate the vapor pressure of spherical water droplets of radius (a) 17 nm and (b) 2.0 μm surrounded by water vapor at 298 K.
Montano1993 [528]

Explanation:

Relation between pressure of water and its droplet is as follows.

           ln (\frac{p}{p_{o}}) = \frac{2 \gamma M}{r \rho RT}

where,   p = pressure of droplet

          p_{o} = water pressure in given temperature

          \gamma = 7.99 \times 10^{-3}

           M = Molecular Weight in Kg/Mol (0.018 for water)

            r = radius in meters

     \rho = density of water in Kg/m^{3} (1000 kg/m^{3})

           R = ideal gas constant (8.31)

           T = temperature in Kelvin

(a)   We will calculate the value of p as follows.

           p = e^{\frac{2 \gamma M}{r \rho RT}} \times p_{o}

              = e^{\frac{2 \times 0.07199 \times 0.018}{1.7 \times 10^{-8} \times 1000 \times 8.31 \times 298 K} \times 25.2

              = 26.8 torr

(b)  And, vapor pressure of spherical water droplets of radius 2.0 \mu m or 2 \times 10^{-6} m

             p = e^{\frac{2 \gamma M}{r \rho RT}} \times p_{o}

              = e^{\frac{2 \times 0.07199 \times 0.018}{2 \times 10^{-6} \times 1000 \times 8.31 \times 298 K} \times 25.2

              = 25.2 torr

Which energy changes in the enthalpy of solution are endothermic, and which are exothermic?
snow_tiger [21]
When energy is needed in order for the reaction to happen, then that reaction is known as endotermic. When the reaction has as a result energy then it is exotermic. An example of an endotermic reaction would be photosynthesis, for an exotermic: combustion.

If an ice cube melts at 0oC but water also freezes at 0oC, what is the difference between melting and freezing in terms of (a) t
zalisa [80]
The energy involved in melting in freezing is heat, At 0 degrees Celsius ice is at an equilibrium where the heat energy absorbed during melting (endothermic) and heat energy dispersed during freezing (exothermic). When ice melts its absorbs heat energy to change states, when water freezes to ice it dispersed heat energy so that the particles can move slow enough to be almost frozen, but still very small vibrations throughout the ice. Particles in the frozen state are packed tightly and help together by a crystal lattice and IMF's, liquid is free flowing with free floating particles that can move freely from one another particle.
