You are on vacation in San Francisco and decide to take a cable car to see the city. A 5800-kgkg cable car goes 260 mm up a hill

inclined 17 ∘∘ above the horizontal. The system is the car and Earth. Part A Determine the change in the total energy of the system when the car moves from the bottom to the top. Ignore friction.

Answer:

4.325\times10^6J

Explanation:

Mass of the cable car, m = 5800 kg

It goes 260 m up a hill, along a slope of \theta=17^o

Therefore vertical elevation of the car = 260sin\theta=260sin17^o=76.0166m

Now, when you get into the cable car, it's velocity is zero, that is, initial kinetic energy is zero (since K.E. = \frac{1}{2} mv^2). Similarly as the car reaches the top, it halts and hence final kinetic energy is zero.

Therefore the only possible change in the cable car system is the change in it's gravitational potential energy.

Hence, total change in energy = mgh = 5800\times9.81\times76.0166J=4.325\times10^6J

where, g = acceleration due to gravity

h = height/vertical elevation

A 20-lb force acts to the west while an 80-lb force acts 45° east of north. The magnitu 80 lb 70 lb 067 lb 100 lb
natulia [17]

Answer:

option C

Explanation:

given,

force act on west  = 20 lb

force act at 45° east of north = 80 lb

magnitude of force = ?

∑ F y  =  80 cos 45⁰

    F y =  56.57 lb

magnitude of forces in x- direction

∑ F x = -20 + 80 sin 45⁰

        = 36.57 lb

net force

F = \sqrt{F_x^2+F_y^2}

F = \sqrt{56.57^2+36.57^2}

F = 67.36 lb≅ 67 lb

hence, the correct answer is option C

Researcher measures the thickness of a layer of benzene (n = 1.50) floating on water by shining monochromatic light onto the fil
earnstyle [38]

Answer:

Minimum thickness; t = 9.75 x 10^(-8) m

Explanation:

We are given;

Wavelength of light;λ = 585 nm = 585 x 10^(-9)m

Refractive index of benzene;n = 1.5

Now, let's calculate the wavelength of the film;

Wavelength of film;λ_film = Wavelength of light/Refractive index of benzene

Thus; λ_film = 585 x 10^(-9)/1.5

λ_film = 39 x 10^(-8) m

Now, to find the thickness, we'll use the formula;

2t = ½m(λ_film)

Where;

t is the thickness of the film

m is an integer which we will take as 1

Thus;

2t = ½ x 1 x 39 x 10^(-8)

2t = 19.5 x 10^(-8)

Divide both sides by 2 to give;

t = 9.75 x 10^(-8) m

Marysya12 [62]

Answer:

The idea behind space expansion is that after the big bang, the universe started infinitely expanding. It's also called metric expansion. Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time goes further into detail on this.
